#the thing that gets me about this #is how when bookling dies he's almost relieved #and in king of scars he has this moment where he thinks *this* is life #and he hates it #it's a miracle he never just killed himself #and yet he's a survivor against his own will almost #he hurtles himself towards destruction but comes out unscathed again and again #sorry op for ranting on your (lovely) gifset! literally never apologize for ranting on my gifsets @callstolike!!
I think about this all the time. because this gifset is about the darkling being a survivor, as in he has survived the worst atrocities known to man for centuries, but that doesnât necessarily mean he enjoys life. I like to describe the darkling as more of a symbol than a person or character, because it honestly feels like that a lot of the time. he has one drive, and one hope, and they are the only things keeping him going. when he loses both, suddenly there is nothing.
I find it interesting how people talk about the darkling as if he ever wanted to come back from the dead. he clearly hates it. all of his life was miserable. he never even had the chance to live a normal one. he never had the chance to find peace. like talk about doomed by the narrative, he was hurtling towards his destruction the moment he was born as both grisha and shadow summoner, with as much empathy and compassion as he had.
he reaches a point of complete and utter self destruction because he spent centuries fighting so desperately for a goal that carved out every last piece of him and left nothing, and then that goal is utterly destroyed in the last moments of his life.Â
the darkling is the ultimate survivor of lifeâs atrocities and the horrific things done to his people. but he cared too much about others and it destroyed him.
aspects of shadow and bone that resonate âł the darkling as a survivor
#this is depressingggg#im channeling the energy i channeled into at the foot of her altar hhhh#i thought i had gotten all of that out when i finished it but apparently not!!#apparently it is still seething within me#anyways#i need a fic where alina becomes queen and as she's going over the previous tsar's accounts of history#she realizes just how much aleksander and the grisha suffered at their hands#the grisha and the darkling are owed reparations by the crown tbh tbh#aleksander morozova | the darkling#shadow and bone#grishaverse#persecution tw#oppression tw#suicide tw

Lovers to strangers
Pairing: Aleksander Morozova/The Darkling x fem!Lantsov princess! reader Summary: The worst thing that can happen is to go from a passionate, ardent feeling to cold indifference. Turning the people you held dearest into strangers. But could YOUR Aleksander ever be a stranger to you again? You have to choose what is more important to you. Ravka and the crown that is rightfully yours, or the man who trampled on your naive, young heart. The choice should be simple... right? Word Count: 8.9k Inspired by: Chance Peña - Lovers to strangers Taglist: @aoi-targaryen @il0vebeingdelulu @chelseyyouraverageluigi ~âąâ€â€â€âą~ Aleksander Morozova's Masterlist ~âąâ€â€â€âą~ Main Masterlist
The evenings at the Little Palace were your favourites.
Especially since, from the window of Aleksander's chambers, you had no view of the Grand Palaceâyour golden cage.
Princess of Ravka. A prisoner in her own country. Well... at least there was one place in the capital where you didn't feel like you were locked in.
Or rather, a bed...
"I can hear your toughtsâŠ" the man cuddling up to you mumbles into your collarbone. You can't help but giggle at the feeling of his soft lips brushing against your skin. The feeling of his rough beard gives you pleasant shivers.
"I thought Grisha couldn't read in minds⊠unless you have another special ability of which I don't know, my general." you say teasingly, stroking his hair.
You can't help but touch this dangerous man. Something has drawn you to him since the first day you came back to Os Alta after Nikolai's disappearance. And as you managed to get a taste of this incredible man, you wanted more and more.
"I have many things that you don't know yet, moya tsarevna. I am a danger. I will break your heart if you trust me so blindly."
"Saints, I love when you speak old Ravkan." you say, leaning in to kiss him again. "Besides, you can't break something that doesn't exist."
It doesn't take long for him to kiss you back. His hand is immediately on your check as he pushes you back on the pillows. He hoovers above you, his lips (far from being gently) moving against yours as his tongue is slipping into your mouth like a snake. He conquers you in every sense of the word.
"Aleksander..." you moan, brushing against him.
"Your grace." he says teasingly, and then completely moves away from you. You look at him furious and offended as the frustration grows inside you. "My little brat. She always has to have what she wants, right?"
"You should know better than to challenge me. I am the heir to the throne, your princess."
"If I remember correctly, you have two older brothers." he points out, placing soft kisses on your collarbone. His beard tickles gently, only further amplifying the fluttering butterflies in your stomach.
"If I remember correctly, I have a general of the Second Army as my secret lover. The Darkling. With your shadows by my side and our combined intelligence and manipulation skills? We are unstoppable."
"Who said I wouldn't betray you? That I wouldn't make myself tsar and take you as my concubine or mistress?" he asks darkly, smiling slyly at you. His pearly teeth gleam menacingly, only making you laugh.
"You won't. You love me too muchâŠÂ BesidesâŠ" you lean closer to him and put the dagger to his throat. He laughs a little as he notices that it is the weapon that he had hidden under his pillow. "I'm much more than just a pretty face and royal blood. If you betray me, nothing will stop me from making you my enemy. It works both ways, Aleksander. If you hurt me, I will hurt you back. I won't sit and cry over my fate. I am creating my legacy and future. Not any men."
"I see." he grabs you by your hips and pushes on the headboard of the bed. You moan as he takes the dagger from you and puts it on your throat. "But don't you think this is better? You under me, trembling with desire." he whispers seductively into your ear. And you almost surrender to his touch and the seductive tone of his voice. Almost...
"You don't want an obedient toy. You want an equal. Only I can be one." you say confidently as you two stare into each other's eyes. You both breathe fast and heavily. You reach your hand towards his and put it on the tip of the dagger. "You wouldn't drag me to your bed if you didn't see it. You despise my family, just as I do, and Ravkans, but here you are: in bed with the princess of Ravka. And we both know that is not all about power, connections, or being part of a greater plan, is it?"
He looks at you deeply, watching your every little reaction as he leans towards you. His shadows play around; a few of them are climbing onto the bed and gently brushing against you two. You tremble with pleasure as you feel them on your hot skin. You moan, pressing yourself against him. You feel the coldness of the metal against your skin, and a little drop of blood slowly falls down on your chest.
He throws the dagger away and uses his tongue to lick the trace of blood on your skin. He sucks up the little wound he made a few seconds ago. You see the shadows getting around you as he loses himself in you.
"You're mine, Aleksander." you whisper into his ear. "And we are all we need anyway. Only I am able to see and embrace the darkness within you." you feel his moan at your words before you hear it. You tremble at his reaction.
"You will regret that, Y/N." he warns, or rather anticipates. You see the sincerity and concern in his eyes as they talk about how you will inevitably abandon him.
"Maybe. But not now." you gasp and pull him to you as you two kiss greedily. His hand goes to your waist, pressing you closer to him. You shiver as you feel the cold metal of his claw ring against your skin. "Sasha..."
"Say it again." he demands. His dark eyes glow against the shadows swirling around you. You lift your hand to caress his cheek softly and tenderly. Your fingertips brush against his chin as you slowly slide your hand down to his neck to trace the hickeys you've already given him.
"Sasha..." you moan as his lips brush against your jaw to tease your neck with their softness and warmth.
"Again." another silent command as the shadows begin to surround you more and more.
"Sasha... moi souveryni... moi ottenok (my shadow)." he silences you with a hard, demanding kiss, tangling his large hand in the back of your head and positioning you to suit his needs as he deepens the kiss, searching for your tongue.
Yes... the darkness of his chambers was definitely your favourite place on earth.
"Are you mad?â you huff, glaring at your elder brother.
You sit in your deceased father's chambers, discussing Ravka's fate in whispers among the nobility. Your eldest brother, Vasily, is chatting with some of the nobles, hoping that he will gain their sympathy as he is going to take the throne after your father. Little did he know that you two had other plans for Ravka.
"What? Do you have a better idea? Mother is going crazy, Vasily wants to play king, and the Grishas are about to start a civil war on us. There's no other way."
"I didn't become a widow just to fawn over some man again. Especially not over him. Besides, isn't he having eyes only on that Sun Summoner of yours?" you ask, nodding towards Alina, who is forced (as Vasily's fiancée) to stand by his side and listen to all the nonsense the nobles say.
"I'm not telling you to marry him... well, at least that's not what plan A is. Just approach him. Find out what he wants and whether he's willing to make arrangements with us. After all, you used to talk often. Especially at night in his chambers."
"Nikolai Lantsov, our father is lying dead in a coffin and you dare to remind me who I visited at night and who I didn't?"
"Please, as if you ever cared about that disgusting pig, who unfortunately for us was our father. Besides, you'd be curious too if I suddenly broke up with the love of my life and let our father sell me into marriage with Shu. Which was very surprising for all of us. You loved Kirigan. I know you did. And he felt the same." you roll your eyes at him, wondering where the bastard got this information since he wasn't in the palace at that time.
"And now I hate him. No. That's too much to say. I don't know him. I don't care about him. He's a stranger for whom I feel absolutely nothing. A traitor to the nation and the crown." you say, not hiding the anger in your voice.
"Don't say that as if we weren't called like that by our countrymen and subjects. But since you don't feel anything towards him, then I guess you won't be offended if I tell you that I solemnly invited him to negotiations regarding a possible settlement and peace?"
"What?! What did you⊠He agreed?" you ask him, shocked and annoyed that, after dropping such a bomb on you, he doesn't even dare look you in the eyes.
"Yes. As a sign of good will, we exchanged prisoners. I gave him back the Grishas he wanted, except for Genya, of course; it took the three of us a very long time to clear her name and guilt about killing our father. It would be too suspicious if we let her go so... easily." he nodded towards Alina, who was giving you a desperate look and asking for help. She was on the other side of the room with Vasily, who desperately tried to... get closer to her. "Sorry, I have to play hero. I just wanted to let you know that he agreed. He's coming tomorrow, right after the funeral." he says, and he approaches Alina to save her from the company of your brother and the nobility... and in the process, he saves himself from your wrath.
You shift your gaze from him to your hands and nervously start picking at your nails. You haven't seen HIM since you left Ravka to marry the Prince of Shu Han. When he treated you so vilely, putting the Sun Summoner on his pedestal, he forgot about you.
And you promised yourself a long time ago that you wouldn't let anyone neglect, humiliate, or disregard you. Especially to someone who isn't worth it. Who chose to ignore you when he meant the world to you.
That's why you decided to do the same as him and slightly modify your plans. Unfortunately, your husband turned out to be an idiot who did not meet your expectations and would only interfere with your grand plan. It's fortunate that he died.
"My princess." Genya's voice breaks you out of your thoughts. You shift your gaze to the woman in the red kefta. "Can I ask you for a minute of your time?"
"Of course." you say, leaving the room with the redhead. "Any news from David?" you ask as the two of you walk down the hall.
The nobles who pass you throw unfavourable glances at Grisha next to you, but you don't pay them any attention, or if you do, you give them a look that makes them look away from you.
"It's as if⊠he wrote that they were leaving their hideout and heading towards the palace." she speaks so quietly that only you can hear her.
Many things have changed since the Darkling's small, and fortunately unsuccessful, show of strength. The Grisha divided; most of them followed their general, wanting to finally gain some rights for themselves, and some of them stayed on the side of Alina and the crown.
So you had to return to the country quite quickly and strengthen the contacts with your spies. Your late husband's family was quite reluctant to let you go. Especially his younger brother, who was the only heir to the crown after his death... you could say that you and Niklaus started getting along much better after your husband's death.
Genya was a new addition. You had a pretty close relationship even before hell broke out in Ravka. You trusted her... within reason. And you were grateful to fate that she didn't join Alina. You didn't like the Sun Summoner... and it's very possible that private grudges played a large part in your dislike of her.
"How many of them?" you ask as you enter your office. The guards give you a curt bow and close the door behind you.
"Not enough for him to think about any plans of attack. But you can never be sure. I heard he acquired a new skill. He creates monsters from shadows. The nichevo'ya or something like that."
"He must be stupid to attack the palace now. We'll deal with his new skills later. For now, we need to locate Baghra. Where is she being held? Is she being held at all, and if not, where is she hiding? This old hag is the key to all of this. We can't do anything without her; we know as much as five-year-olds about the fold, amplifiers, and merzost." you say, flipping through the pages on your desk.
"Alina and Mal are working on locating another amplifier. They're scheduled to leave soon."
"Impossible. They're not going anywhere. I will not risk the lives of our only Sun Summoner and Compass to Morozova's amplifiers. The Darkling is heading this way; his men and spies may be anywhere, and recently, the number of Fjerdan provocations on our border has tripled."
"They won't stay locked up here."
"I am aware of this. But they won't move from here in the next two weeks. Our priority is peace with either the Darkling or the Fjerdan. We cannot wage two wars at onceâcivil and with another country. It's best if there's none, but I guess it is not possible. We have shed too much blood in the fold itself; we need to end this centuries-old conflict and not escalate it, because Ravka won't take any longer what is happening here."
"About that⊠I doubt that General⊠Darkling will be willing to compromise." you sigh, knowing full well that she could probably be right.
"Then we'll have to remove him from the picture." you say slowly, wondering if you were really ready for this.
"You mean..."
"I do not know yet." you interrupt her, not quite sure what you're going to do. And even if you knew, you had no intention of revealing such plans to anyone. "It depends on what the situation requires of us. Alina is too young to be a general. She may be a symbol of hope and a new, better future, but she is not fit to lead an entire army. And the Darkling⊠is unpredictable and out of any control."
"You miss him, don't you?" her question slightly catches you off guard.
You tried your hardest not to think... about him. Or what could have been if things between you went differently. You simply couldn't afford it. You had to be strong for Ravka, your subjects, and your brothers. And thinking about Aleksander certainly wouldn't make your situation any better.
"I⊠I think I miss the idea of him that I created in my mind. I miss the man I thought I knew. But in the end, he turned out to be like⊠just like anyone else."
"Like all powerful men." she sums up your statement, staring at the window behind you.
"Exactly." you nod, thinking about what she must have gone through under your father. That's why, whoever would take the throne, you promised yourself that you would make sure that there would be a whole new era for Ravka. "Genya." you call after her before she leaves your office.
"Yes, my princess?"
"Make sure you make time for David. After this hell⊠you two deserve the best." you give her a small smile before sending her away. You sigh, rubbing your hand over your forehead. There were so many things to plan and very little time.
But you can't help but think about Aleksander. There were rumours that the fold had destroyed it. That he had become crazy, ruthless, and devoid of any empathy or conscience.
Your hands involuntarily move to the cabinet and open it. You take the bracelet he gave you into your hands. Now you know that it had a special, rare piece of metal in it that allowed Durast to locate you from miles awayâan ability Darkling must have used many times in the past. You made sure it was deleted, but... sentiment didn't let you throw it away. You don't know why. Or at least you don't want to admit to yourself this little weakness from the past.
"Why do you want to rule Ravka?" you frown at his question. You open your eyes and turn to the side to look at his face.
You took a little trip outside the palace. You were lying in a clearing in the forest on a picnic blanket. Your head was resting on Aleksander's stomach. One of his hands was lazily running through your hair, and the other was playing with your own hand.
"Why not? I would look nice on stamps and coins." you laugh carelessly, playing with his fingers.
"Answer the question." he says seriously, sitting up. Your head rests on his lap as he leans over you and looks at you with those piercing eyes of his, analysing your every little reaction.
"I don't want Ravka to look like it does now. Vasily is... like our father, conservative, without any new ideas, wanting to continue repeating established patterns. And Nikolai... is too controversial. He has revolutionary views, and the rule of both will end in a civil war. I don't want us to shed any more blood. Grisha and Ravkan... we are one. We are the same. Only you live a little longer and have additional benefits from your powers, but... it doesn't change the fact that we are born and die the same way. We believe in the same thing, and we want the same thing."
"Which is?" he asks, whispering, his dark eyes trained on you the entire time.
"Peace." you say, leaning back into him and closing your eyes. Sunlight filters through the treetops, illuminating your face. You sigh, wrapped in the warmth of your beloved Aleksander's arms and his scent. "Love." you add, opening your eyes and giving him a small, uncertain smile.
"You want to be loved?" he asks, disbelieving that someone like you, the daughter of the Lantsov family, could only want something so... simple. You always talked about taking power with ambition and fire in your eyes. He never thought that you didn't want it out of pure greed, but simply out of a desire to make Ravka better. Just like him.
"Everyone wants it. Even you, my mighty and scary shadow summoner." you snap him out of his thoughts by lifting your hand and caressing his bearded cheek. "And trust me when I say that I can give you all of the love of this world that you need."
"You don't know everything about me." he denies, knowing full well that you would run away from him, terrified, and that all your love for him would evaporate the moment you found out he was the Black Heret.
"You don't know everything about me either, sweetheart. I see your darkness. I see your struggles. You won't scare me away. You cannot. No amount of your shadows and the darkness of the past will do that." you promise, and he looks at you in shock. You push yourself up on your elbows and kiss him sweetly and lazily.
You act as if you have all the time in the world, and the only thing that matters is the two of you. And he allows himself to lose himself for a moment in this little fantasy you created with him in a forgotten clearing near the fountain dedicated to the Starless Saint.
"Eya fyela chi, moya tsarevna. For as long as I breathe. We shall rule together. Side by side." he whispers against your lips, and he's no longer sure who he's trying to fool. You or himself.
"I want nothing more, Aleksander." you reply, straddling him and cupping his neck as you pull him in for another kiss.
And he realises a very sad and bitter truth. That never before, in anyone else's arms, under anyone else's touches, kisses, and whispers of love and adoration, had he felt so happy and at peace as he did with you.
"Wow. Did Genya help you?" you snort at your brother's reaction as you enter the council room.
"What? Can't I dress nicely myself?" you mock him gently, laughing. You could slightly improve your appearance with the help of your favourite Grisha. After all, you had to show yourself to your ex somehow. And you were going to make sure the bastard would squirm, upset and mad that he wasn't with you anymore.
"Yes, you can, but you usually don't. Is this for a certain dark rebel general?" he teases with you, at which you roll your eyes.
"NO. And I wish you wouldn't insinuate such things. I'm not saying you're dressing up for the Sun Summoner or for that squaller of hers who's arguing with her all the time. Exactly! Who are you ultimately in love with? I haven't been able to keep up with the updates lately. You know. Saving my country from the fire of rebellion, and so on."
"You know what... I was going to wait here with you to spare you a one-on-one confrontation with our very peaceful and cute Darkling... BUT I remembered that Alina was waiting for me. Will you entertain your ex until we get here? Thanks, sister." he winks at you, smiling when he sees your expression fall, and he heads towards the exit, humming.
"Son of a bitch." you mutter under your breath as he walks past you.
"Yes, indeed!" he replies with an even bigger smile. You can only laugh and shake your head at him as he leaves you alone in the room.
You pace around the room, nervously picking at the bracelet on your wrist.
This was supposed to be the first time you would see him since you left for Shu Han and married their prince there. You heard that he changed after the events in the fold. That he went crazy about Alina and became obsessed with HIS Sun Summoner. His lust for power and greed only increased his dark madness, which made even his most trusted Grisha fear.
You heard rumours that he always had shadow monsters by his side and that he received a souvenir from his volcras in the form of black scars marring his face. Though you're not sure if anything can disfigure him.
Somehow, you feel him approaching. Before he touches the door handle, you know he's behind it. You lean against the table with Ravka's map on it and wait. Your heart beats rapidly as the silence of the room is broken by the sound of the door opening.
He doesn't come in right away. He freezes the moment he sees you. You take in his new appearance carefully, less surprised to see him than he is to see you. He has a few black scars on his face, his complexion is sallower, and his eyes are cloudy, probably from lack of sleep.
"Kirigan." you say, as he still doesn't make any moves towards you. The sound of your voice wakes him from his trance. He closes the door behind him, letting in a single shadow creature that follows silently behind him. You only stare at it for a moment before your gaze returns to his dark irises, which have been staring at you continuously since he opened the door.
"Princess." he watches you carefully, as if looking for any flawâthe slightest shake in your stoic and unflappable demeanour. Something that would prove to him that you're not better off without him. "I've heard about your husband's death. My sincere condolences." he says it in the most insincere tone you've ever heard.
"Thank you. It is very hard. He was such a good husband. Possibly the best I could come across." you say, smiling sadly, which only angers him more.
You see him press his lips into a thin line. His dark eyes never leave you, as he takes in every new detail in your appearance. His shadow monsters stand obediently behind him.
"Is this necessary?" you ask, nodding towards the shadow creature.
"Does it scare you? My Nichevo'ya are always with me." he says, as if to challenge you.
"No. Not at all. But now I don't wonder why no one else is besides it." your snide remark clearly hurts his pride. He takes a breath to respond, but the door opens again, and this time Alina and Nikolai join you.
"Aleksander." Sun Summoner greets him, and you roll your eyes. Of course he would tell her his real name. After all, it was his solnishka.
"Alina." he nods at her, taking his eyes off you. Because how could you compare to his sunshine?
"Nikolai. Welcome everyone. I guess we can start." Nikolai interjects jokingly, trying to break the obvious tension in the room. And by the way the three of you look at each other, you already know that this isn't going to be an easy negotiation at all.
"Egs." The man next to you hands you what you want. "Flour." He pours it in for you, which you let him do, considering that there wasn't a single bag in the Little Palace's kitchen and you were both too lazy to look for a bowl to measure it out with. Besides, you know it would end just like last timeâa big war that the servants would have to clean up later. "Sugar." He hands you a clay jar, and you taste some of it before pouring it into the dough. You wince when you taste the salt, at which he laughs loudly. "Aleksander! What did I tell you last time?! I'm making you a birthday cake; you could at least not try to sabotage me." You roll your eyes at him and reach for the sugar yourself.
"I told you it wasn't necessary. There are other activities we could engage in." He murmurs against your ear, wrapping his arms around your waist.
"If you had told me earlier, and not after the amazing sex, calling it the best birthday present you ever received, then we could. Now take your hands off me and help me mix the dough."
"But it's my birthday⊠shouldn't I be the one giving you orders?" He asks, giving you puppy-dog eyes. You break your facade and lean in, kissing him sweetly, only to pull away from him the moment his hands touch the hem of one his shirts he gave you to wear.
"Maybe next year. Now you better figure out how we can fit 200 candles in here for you." You pat his chest and try not to bite your lip as he rolls up the sleeves of his shirt and starts mixing the dough. You watch him uninhibitedly, though, and the way the muscles in his arms move.
"Actually, a little more."
"How many?" You ask curiously, taking a sip of wine from his glass since yours is long gone.
"531." You choke on your alcohol, and he laughs, wiping the rest of the cake off his hands and patting you gently on the back.
"Saints, I'm sleeping with a fossil."
"Just half an hour ago, you were doing it very enthusiastically, I must say."He whispers seductively, pressing a kiss on your temple as you transfer the dough to the baking tin.
"Oh, shut up." you say, trying to resist him somehow, but you both know how it will end soon. "Because someone will come in here and see us."
With a wave of his hand, a thick layer of shadows appears around the door. The palace kitchen is immersed in a gentle darkness; the only source of light is the fire from the stove where the cake is baked and the window.
"We have a while before it's ready... can I play with my present again?" he asks, picking you up and sitting on the table, getting between your legs.
"Do not say that. It's creepy." you say, pushing his hands away from the ties of the shirt you're wearing. He's not at all put off and instead attacks your neck with kisses.
"It's my birthday; you told me I could do anything with you, moya tsarevna." He reminds you, biting lightly on the skin of your neck and making you moan.
You tangle your hands in his hair and push him away from you. The disgruntled frown on his face reminds you of the face of a grumpy child, but you can't laugh now since you're trying to regain control of yourself.
"Within reason... so don't think you can seduce me with your old Ravkan, touch, or kisses. We are not doing that here." you state firmly, but he doesn't give up.
"But lapushka, you are the only dessert I want, milaya. Moi sol ye tselai. Zyoma maya olya. Eya chela (I'm hungry) for you. Eya fyela chi, don't you love me too, moya koroleva?" He whispers against your skin as he places kisses all over your face, his beard tickling you again, making you go completely soft for him the moment his lips capture yours in a hot, deep kiss that takes your breath away.
And neither of you are surprised that you almost set the kitchen of the Little Palace on fire, completely forgetting about the cake.
"I want my summoner back." you huff at his absurd demand, at which he frowns at you furiously.
"You have no right to her."
"She had trained under my and Baghr's gaze. She owes me. Her service will be enough payment."
"She is the bride of Ravka and the fiancée of one of my brothers." you continue firmly, not allowing anyone else to speak up and ignoring Alina's annoyed look at you.
"One of them?" he asks, raising an eyebrow.
"Is there a problem?" you growl in anger. He shifts in his seat; the strange creature is hovering next to him like a faithful dog, reacting to his every slightest movement. The son of a bitch tried to intimidate you.
"Not at all. It's good to know who I should get out of my way."
"If you mean what I think..." you start threateningly, completely ignoring his shadow monster.
"It would be very hard for her to be the bride of Ravka without a groom." he finishes his thought, smirking ominously at you when he sees your furious reaction.
"Oh, not at all. I would also be able to marry her." you tell him, and he glares at you madly. You hear this strange thing growling at his side. Apparently, it must have felt and shared his emotions.
"While being already mine? I doubt so."
"I belong to no one, and she belongs to Ravka!" you shout, standing up and slamming your hand on the table.
"She belongs to Grisha!" he stands up as well, banging his fist on the table. You both lean over the table on opposite sides, looking at each other hatefully. Shadows gather around him, behind his back.
"She is a person! And can speak out for herself. Thank you two very much. You know it, right? Saints, you two are perfect for each other." Nikolai interrupts the two of you before you two start a fight. He rubs his eyes with his hand and looks at the clock. "Gene⊠ekhem⊠Lord⊠um⊠Mister Kirigan. I think it would be better for all of us if we went to sleep. You and your people had a long way here; I'm sure you would use some sleep and the comfort of a bath." you'd laugh at your brother's awkwardness if your ex didn't get on your nerves like a damn master.
The Darkling sighs, nodding. He stands up, brushing invisible dust from his all-black kefta.
"I guess my chambers are still where they were?" he asks, heading towards the door, and you just can't help but stab him in the back at goodnight.
"You are not allowed to walk inside the Little Palace." you say stoically. Aleksander stops. Nikolai and Alina look at you as if you were a madwoman, suicidal.
"What?" he asks, turning towards you to glare daggers at you.
"That's not your property. You don't choose where you sleep."
"I built a Little Palace with my own hands when you were not even planning to come to this world!"
"And yet I am the one who has any rights to it. Besides, if you want to play that card, most of the population on this planet wasn't even planning to come to the world, and yet you are not going around and claiming things that don't belong to you. It also didn't stop you from seducing someone much younger than you."
"You⊠you are walking on very thin ice, princess." he growls at you furiously, getting so close that you're only a few centimetres apart. From this distance, you can get a good look at the black, raw scars on his face.
"I am not afraid." you reply firmly, looking at him defiantly and tilting your chin up. You both breathe heavily. Rage is boiling within you two; you both know it's not just caused by the disagreements over Ravka and Grisha, but something far more personal...
"You should be." he whispers. Your breaths practically mingle...
"If you say: make me, I will throw out my dinner. And I would rather not." you roll your eyes at your brother.
You throw one last hateful glare at Aleksander and walk to the exit. You can't stop yourself from hitting him in his arms with your own. He growled something under his breath, mad, but you don't care to listen.
You leave the room confident that you've won this little battle between the two of you. Little did you know that the real one wouldn't be fought between you until late at night.
"A chauvinistic imbecile who thinks that just because he was born first and has a penis between his legs, he has the right to behave like a future king. Even his stupid horses are smarter than him."
"Don't insult the horses, darling." Aleksander mutters over his papers, looking through the latest reports from under the fold.
He was about to leave for Kirbirsk to supervise the crossing of a new type of boat to the other side of the wall of shadows. You didn't like the prospect of being away from him for such a long time. Especially when your oldest (and probably stupidest) brother tried to convince your parents to marry you to the prince of Shu Han.
"Doesn't it bother you? Seriously? What if he succeeds and you will never see me again?" You ask furiously, crossing your arms and looking at him.
"No way, you're too much of a nuisance for me to get rid of you so easily." He replies jokingly. However, when he finally looks up at you and sees your serious, mad attitude, he throws the papers on the desk and stands up. He walks over to you and cups your cheek with his hand tenderly, which you reluctantly allow, still furious with him. "Even if something like that happens, which I highly doubt, given your manipulative skills, connections, and a large, beautiful mind that many men should fear, I will come for you. Always. Even if I have to fight the volcras, I will always come back for you." He says, placing a tender kiss on your forehead. "You are mine, moya tsarevna. I'm not sharing you with anyone. Especially some pompous, high-born idiot who haunts Girsha like a haunting dog."
'But how long will it last? How long will you be feeling like this? I will die. Much faster than you. I am like a small ink stain in your long-lived book of life." you say, fully aware that you two are a lost cause.
But he doesn't let you think about it for long. He latches onto your lips hungrily, redirecting your thoughts to him and this moment between you. He pins you to the war table and effectively takes over your every little cell as his tongue tangles with yours. He moans softly as you tangle your hands in his hair. He somehow manages to distance himself from you. He rests his forehead against yours, stroking your cheeks with his thumbs.
"You are not a stain. You are my light. Something I have wanted for centuries but could never experience. You saw me... all of me. And you never turned away. You never judged me for who I was or what I did. And I will do everything. Everything in my power to make sure you shine for me as long as possible, moya lapushka."
"So you won't replace me? For someone else? More powerful? Equal to you? You won't change us from lovers to strangers?" you ask as he places small kisses on your cheeks, jaw, neck, and collarbone.
"Never." he whispers against your lips before kissing you again, his fingers finding effortlessly their way to the buttons of your dress, stroking and kissing every little bit of your skin he exposes as a promise.
Which he breaks a few weeks later when he meets Sun Summoner.
You know you shouldn't fall asleep in his chambers when he's back in Os Alta, but you've been doing it since you returned to Ravka.
After your first sleepless night in your chambers, you snuck into the Little Palace and into his chambers. And you hated yourself for how pathetic you were when you fell asleep the moment you wrapped yourself in his black blanket.
At first, you were tormented by memories of the time you spent with him, but as the days and weeks passed, memories of him only haunted you in your dreams. And now it was mostly habit that kept you in the general's chambers. After all, you spent a lot of time here. In fact, most of your happy memories. What a pity that they were just a facade, a web of lies that Aleksander had been weaving since the beginning of your relationship.
You shiver as a sudden chill passes through you. You reluctantly get out of bed and wrap yourself in a blanket. You walk over to the window, making sure it's closed, and close the curtains, plunging the room into complete darkness.
Suddenly, an arm wraps around you, pulling you into a broad chest. Before you can scream, a hand covers your mouth, and when you see the familiar black ring on one of the man's fingers, you go into a fit of pure fury.
You struggle against his grip, screaming into his hand, trying to bite it somehow. The blanket falls off of you, causing his arm to press you tighter against his body. You heat up as you feel yourself perfectly fitting against his body, involuntarily remembering... much more pleasant situations when he pressed you against him.
"Stop it. You'll only get tired. And I want to talk to you like a civilised person, so calm down." He whispers in your ear. His bearded cheek brushes against yours as he moves his hand from your mouth to your neck, squeezing gently as a reminder that if you try anything, he's ready to punish you.
"Calm the fuck down yourself. Since when does a civilised man sneak into a woman's bedroom to talk to her?"
"This isn't your bedroom."
"And this is not your palace." you reply teasingly, and by the way he tightens his grip on you, you know he has a scowl on his face. You smile, pleased that you're able to get under his skin.
"This is debatable. Will you stay still and listen to me, or do I have to hold you like that? Not that I mind, but I'd rather look at your face."
"And I feel disgusted every time I look at you, so I'd rather stay like this."
Not a second passes after you finish your sentence when he turns you around in his arms and pushes you against the large window behind you. You're glad you managed to close the curtains earlier; otherwise, you would have been pressed against the cold glass instead of the soft, velvety fabric by the angry Black Heretic.
And you wonder if you're losing your mind or if you've gained courage if you don't feel an ounce of fear as his shadow monsters circle around you. You can't quite recall how he called them since his dark eyes stared at you with an intense fire, which made you speechless for a while.
"You really have nothing else to tell me?" He asks calmly this time, running his thumb over the base of your neck. As if he were playing with his prey.
However, subconsciously, you know that he won't hurt you. If not for the sake of his feelings towards you, then at least because he's not stupid enough to kill Ravka's princess while he's negotiating... which you actually have no idea why he agreed to.
"Like what?" You finally ask, breaking the silence that had fallen between you. His face falls, you see a hint of disappointment in his eyes, and your eyes involuntarily land on the scars on his forehead, cheek, and nose. And suddenly, you feel a huge need to run your finger over them.
"I don't know... maybe why did you run away? You left and got married to Shu Han dog without saying me anything!"
"I didn't want to interrupt your fun with Alina. Honestly, what did you expect after you found yourself another woman? That I'll stay in some fucking threesome with you and your Sun Summoner?! You're not that good in bed, sweetheart." You mock him and the fact that he had the nerve to call you out on what you did. As if he wasn't the first to break the promises you made to each other in the privacy of his chambers. You were supposed to be partners in crime. It's not your fault that he decided to turn you into strangers.
"You know damn well that she was only a means to an end! The issue here is that you left me! You of all people turned away from me and ran away as if I meant nothing to you!" He shouts madly, slamming his hand on the window behind you in anger. You're surprised it didn't break into pieces under the pressure of his strength.
"Is that why you stuck your tongue in her mouth?! Because she was just a means to an endâa weapon you wanted to use? Besides, when were you going to tell me about widening the fold?!"
"That wasn't a reason for you to run away to another fucking country and marry anyone only to spite me!"
"But it was enough for you to kill him?!" You further question his actions, revealing to him that you know full well on whose orders the poison was poured into your husband's chalice... or that the black scars on his body were not caused by an infection.
"And how else could you be mine again?! Also, don't pretend that you have any morals. We both know that you didn't particularly mourn his death. I had to somehow fix the mistakes you made because of your bratty attitude."
"If you would just be honest with me from the beginning, you fucking distrustful son of a bitch, then there would be nothing to fix!â
"Do you want me to be honest?" He growls furiously, leaning towards you, your noses practically brushing against each other as he keeps his gaze on your eyes. "There wasn't a single damned second that I didn't think about you. Not a single dream without you, tormenting me because I can't have you. Do you know what I was thinking about in the fold when I thought I was going to die? About you. All I could think about was the time we spent together, when I had you in my arms. I do not want anyone else. Alina or any other fucking Sun Summoner. I don't want power; I can't do anything without you by my side anyway. So don't stand here and blame me for ruining our relationship when I love you with all the shattered heart I have left."
"So don't give me reasons to leave." You whisper, tired from all this arguing, as he reinforces your belief that you both suffered without each other and that you got under each other's skin so deeply that it was impossible to stop thinking about each other.
You hold back the tears you promised yourself not to shed because of him. He cups your cheek tenderly in his hand and rests his forehead against yours as you breathe out shakily, trying to maintain your facade in front of him.
"Maybe you should stop running away every time you have doubts about me? Why can't you have some faith in me?" He asks in a shaky voice, making you open your eyes to meet his pleading gaze. It's the first time in your life you've seen him so... defenseless. Open. Vulnerable.
"I have no doubt about you, Aleksander. I know you are capable of anything. That nothing can stand in your way if you really set your mind to it, not even Alina or Baghra. I don't care about Alina, what you wanted to do with her, or if your plans were moral or not. The problem is that you lied to me. You went behind my back."
"And look where it got me. Do you think I'll do it again?" He asks, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear and pressing a kiss on your forehead.
He rests his lips against your forehead for a while, burying his nose in your hair and inhaling your scent as you both try your best to have a proper conversation and don't melt in each other's arms.
"I don't now. You gave me many reasons not to trust you. Alina's case, destroying the fold, Baghra being your mother. I guess the list goes on and on."
"The last one had reasonable reasons." he says, pulling away from you to look into your eyes.
You can't help but burst out laughing. He smiles and cups your cheek in his hand. The healed scar from the amplifier attracts your attention.
"You removed it. Why? That was your only connection to Alina and her power." You ask confused, realising that the strange connection between them didn't disappear because Alina became stronger but because he completely removed the amplifier from his system.
"The only connection I want to have is with you." He says confidently, taking your hands in his. "Besides... after using Merzost, I became... weaker. Holding this amplifier would cause infection, poison my blood, and ultimately kill me."
"Are you⊠dying? After the second use of Merzost?"
"Don't worry, moya tsarevna. I have a long enough life ahead of me with you." He says, caressing your cheek. "And after discovering some entries from my grandfather's diary, I know how to extend it for you."
"What if I don't want it? If I don't want you anymore?"
"Then I have nothing to lose. I will do anything to bring Grisha to the throne, to their place above everyone else in this damn country. And I'll make sure you stay by my side. Willingly or not. You always belonged to me. You were supposed to rule with me, side by side. And with the time I will provide you, I am sure you will find in your heart the love for me again. Although I doubt that any of us could lose it in such a short time."
You shiver at his certainty and his dark gaze. However, it is not a thrill of fear but of excitement... and you are not surprised that this was his plan B. If you were him, you would do the same.
You signed a pact with him on the first night you spent together. There was no turning back from then on. You were supposed to be together. As absurd as it may sound. Princess of Ravka and the Black Heretic. Otkazat'sya and Grisha. Monsters on Ravka's throne. But only you would be able to restore balance without causing a civil war.
You might not trust each other, be suspicious of each other, or disagree with the decisions you made, but you knew that you both had Ravka's best interests in mind. No matter who else gets hurt, that was how the word worked: you were either a martyred saint or a selfish sinner. And you weren't going to suffer for the sake of anything else but your country. And Aleksander was fed up with his people suffering for who they were, simply for being.
Together, you could do great things.
"Tomorrow is the reading of my damned father's will. His last will is about to include who he wanted on the throne. We have enough time toâŠ"
"I've already taken care of it. You will be a beautiful, wise and cruel tsaritsa." He cuts you off before you can finish your thought, and you smile. One mind. You've always acted like this... but only if you didn't hide anything from each other.
"I will have competition, with such a tsar at my side." you say, and finally allow yourself to lean in and kiss him. His mouth is a little chapped, but you don't mind when all you can focus on is the warmth that engulfs you in his arms again and the pleasant tingling that spreads from your lips throughout your body as he groans in pleasure. You pull away from him just as he wants to deepen the kiss. You tease him a little, and you reach out to caress the black scars on his face with your fingertips. "If you look at Alina even once, I will gouge out both of your eyes and make sure your little sun never shines again." You whisper, placing small kisses where the scars are most visible.
He doesn't freeze; he doesn't tense up. He just moans quietly at the touch of your lips in the places he hates the most and which you seem to treat with fascination and tenderness.
You were as jealous of him as he was of you. You both would kill anyone who dared to steal the other from you. And you both know it's not the worst thing you are able to do for each other.
"Don't worry⊠I'll only be able to see you. And how beautiful and breath-taking you will look in the crown and my black colours."
"Black?" you ask, raising an eyebrow at him and pulling away slightly.
"Yes. You're mine. As well as I am yours." he says, picking you up as he walks to your bed.
"I won't wear a kefta. This damn thing is hard to take off," you tell him immediately, at which he laughs, unbuttoning his own.
"We'll see." he replies to you with a mischievous smirk and leans over you, kissing you again.
And later that night, as you lie curled in each other's arms and discuss the plans you have for Ravka in whispers, you know you wouldn't have it any other way. Even if you face more fights and doubts with him. And there is no doubt that you would try to manipulate each other to get what you wantâto try and make the other feel guilty just to bring your own plan to lifeâbut neither of you wanted to be left on top of the world utterly alone.
It was too late for you to be strangers to each other again. And since neither of you cared about your reputation, your morals, or who you would become in the eyes of the world, you might as well make them fear you. You will be the most terrifying pair of lovers in history.
And as he fell asleep, you started playing with the ball of light with a small smile on your face, squeezing his hand as an amplifier you needed to strengthen the connection you managed to make with Alina that no one knew about. Well... besides you, only the Durast, who made an engagement ring for the Sun Summoner, knew that you were trying to gain from her the power you needed to be an equal for the sleeping Shadow Summoner wrapped around you.
You would tell him... in time.
First, you had to learn how to use your new powers and make sure the connection between you and Alina would last. However, this required much more drastic measures than putting a collar around her neck or a small ring on her finger.
You press a kiss on his chest and rest your head on his shoulder, snuggling into him. You fall asleep in his arms, wondering how you'll convince him to give you some of his mother's bones... or his own.
After all, Morozova's amplifiers were the strongest.
You will soon see this for yourself when, right after your coronation and marriage, you find out that you were unconsciously carrying one under your heart after this night.

I canât help but find it funny whenever certain Shadow and Bone fans discuss the Darklingâs character and dramatically ponder over his motivations while lamenting what could have been. Like, I agree that heâs a complicated characterâŠjust not complicated Iâm the way theyâre thinking of.
For them itâs like:
âAh you see the Darkling is such a well-written character because of his nefarious hunger for power cloaked by sympathetic motives. He seeks a noble goal but alas! If only he wasnât so corrupted by power and just approached the issue of Grisha liberation with diplomacy and talked some sense into the Tsar! Such a simple thingâŠand yet his greed won out.â
I have found that many criticisms of the Darklingâs larger goals are based on the assumption that his goal is based in a personal desire for power and not a collective one. The idea that his goals of freeing Grisha from exploitation and servitude are not genuine, but rather something that obscures his hidden greed and selfishness. My biggest gripe is that this sort of commentary on the Darklingâs character always reads as a bit self-congratulatory for what is (in my opinion) a misreading of his character.
Also, I heavily dislike the idea that all it would take for him to achieve liberation would be tactics like working within the system, diplomatically appealing to the Tsar or just generally appealing to the humanity of the ruling monarchs. I have to wonder: do these people honestly believe that oppressed groups of people obtain human rights by politely appealing to the ruling class? In Shadow and Bone, the Tsar is not only incompetent but also a serial rapist with unchecked power who benefits immensely from the servitude of Grisha. So why on earth would he just give them rights when he gains so much by keeping them under his thumb? Relying on the mercy and meagre charity of a corrupt ruler is a futile game that will end in failure.
âOh but his hunger for power-!â His hunger for power that would enable him to do what? At the end of the day, Aleksander needs power to achieve liberation for the Grisha and to protect them from the existential threats they face on nearly every side of the conflict. Tell me, how is he going to accomplish anything from a position of servitude and powerlessness? Would it be more noble of him to just sit quietly and wait for the Lantsovs to come to their senses and realize that Grisha are deserving of equal treatment? How much do the Grisha stand to lose by prioritizing civility and diplomacy when their lives are at stake?
In this situation, power was not a want, but a need. The fact that the narrative consistently frames his quest for power as a bad and greedy goal is so naive and backwards because realistically there is no way for him to accomplish it otherwise! This is echoed in Alinaâs efforts to save the country through the Morozova amplifiers and being chided for her greed as a result. Either way, this story has some strange priorities when it comes to discussing oppression and liberation.

Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No archive warnings apply
Relationships: The Darkling | Aleksander Morozova/Alina Starkov
Characters: The Darkling | Aleksander Morozova, Alina Starkov, Mal Oretsev, Genya Safin, Fedyor Kaminsky, Ivan (The Grisha Trilogy)
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Heavy Angst, Mutual Pining, Tooth-Rotting Fluff, Smut, The Darkling | Aleksander Morozova Loves Alina Starkov, Alina Starkov Loves The Darkling | Aleksander Morozova, Forced Marriage, drunk talk, Unplanned Pregnancy, Communication, Tsar The Darkling | Aleksander Morozova, Tsaritsa Alina Starkov, switching POV, Drunk Sex, Oral Sex, Vaginal Sex, Size Kink, No Beta, amazing political plot got eaten by the deadline monster, which is probably just as good cause I suck at writing political plot, Sorry slight Mal bashing because I just can't help it, Also Grisha love their Darkling, Alina basically admits "Sasha did nothing wrong", Pine4Pine 2023
Summary:
Alina and Malyen lost their fight to the Darkling on that skiff during the crossing to Novokribirsk. And so they all went back to Os Alta, both captives of the Darkling, the new Tsar of Ravka.

Bow
Pairing: Aleksander Morozova x reader
Summary: All will bow before the Queen...
A/N: Idk what exactly this is, I just like the idea of our Sasha being King (and Iâm hyped for S2) đ
The Lantsovs had been dead for only three days, and while the new King sat the throne, the old Kingâs court remained. Â And they were not happy. Â Their King was dead, and a heretic had claimed his crown; the woman he had made his Queen nearly as horrific. Â Of course, not every member of the old Kingâs court hated Grisha and thought they were cursed by the Saints, but many of them did.
But their opinions did not matter. Â Aleksander was King, and you were Queen. Â Soon, you would have your own court, made up of your trusted Grisha and smartest advisors. Â Even so, your husband couldnât execute Pytorâs entire inner circle, not if he wanted a chance of winning over those who opposed him, but they would respect their new monarchs. Â The old Kingâs court either feared or respected the new tsar enough that when the summons arrived, none of them ignored it.
Aleksander had arranged for your maids to dress you in the finest silk gown, the rarest gems, the most ornate crown from the dead Queenâs collection. Â It was slightly unsettling to wear a dead womanâs tiara, but your Sasha had reassured you that soon, he would have an entire set of crowns, tiaras, and diadems commissioned for you. Â But for now, for your first appearance as Ravkaâs new tsaritsa, it would do.
You stood before the closed doors to the throne room, hands folded before you.  Your husband was at your side, adjusting the crown atop his own head.  âEverything will be fine, my love,â Aleksander said, taking your hand and kissing it.  âThey will respect youâŠor they will suffer.â  Ivan and Fedyor, who had been appointed Aleksanderâs head guards, opened the doors to the throne room, and your husband took your arm.
You kept your gaze focused on the thrones at the head of the room, what Aleksander had fought so hard for, fought to give you.  When you reached the dais, your husband allowed you to step up first before coming to your side.  âThese past few days have beenâŠbusy, shall we say?â the tsar began, chuckling to himself while the dead Kingâs court looked on, some with anger in their eyes.  âSo I regret that I have been unable to introduce my darling wife to you all until now.â
Some of the court began murmuring amongst themselves, but Aleksander pushed on. Â âThere has been neither time nor resources for a coronation, one that my beloved wife deserves, but nevertheless; I present to you, your tsaritsa, Queen Y/N Morozova.â Â Whispers and murmurs broke out at once, and you fought to keep your face calm and neutral. Â But that failed when one of the courtiers screamed, âBurn the witch!â
Aleksander was eerily calm when he next spoke.  âI fear there may have been a miscommunication.  You will bow before your QueenâŠâ Your husband raised a hand and shadows slithered from every corner of the room, seeking out the woman who had insulted you.  With a flick of his wrist, the offending womanâs head was severed from her neck.  âOr you will die.â
Like a wave, the old Kingâs court fell to their knees, whispers of âmoya tsaritsa,â filling the air. Â Aleksander smiled, taking your hand and kissing it as he gestured for you to sit. Â âNow, does anyone else have anything to say about our new Queen?â Â Shakily, a man rose to his feet, and Aleksander leaned forward. Â âMoi tsar,â he said, voice trembling. Â âI never favored the old Kingâs ways, especially his stance on Grisha. Â I admit, I do not know much of your people, but I know that your wife is kind. Â She is merciful, and I will bow to anyone who can promise to fight for Ravka, to truly fight for Ravka.â
You pulled yourself upright, willing your hands not to shake. Â âI will,â you said. Â âI may be new in the crown, but I will lay down my life for my nation. Â I will ride into battle alongside my soldiers if it is asked of me. Â I vow to all of you that I will never sit idly by and watch my people suffer like the old King had.â Â Aleksander felt pride swell in his heart at your words, and he felt the mood in the room shift. Â The man standing bowed his head, placing a hand over his heart. Â âThen long live the Queen.â

Aleksander and his followers have set up a base in a house of an aristocrat family. Yes, he has survived. But paid a price for it. He created creatures of shadows with merzost, but because of that his health is falling. He's coughing, often with black substance, has headaches and has scars on his face that can't be healed. His condition deeply worries him. But something troubles him even more.
One day another group of recruits arrives. Aleksander immediately goes to greet them and looks at their faces. He's happy to see David and tells him that. Then, he returns to looking around. However, he doesn't see what he wants.
'Was [Y/N] with you?' he asks David, who's retreating with Genya. They stop. The Durast shakes his head with sorrow.
'I haven't seen her since the day we left the Little Palace afterâŠ' he doesn't finish. But Aleksander knows what he wanted to say. He nods. He walks to Fruzsi, another Tidemaker.
'Ask everyone who has arrived whether they have seen [Y/N] [L/N] during the last weeks,' he orders her. Fruzsi is surprised by this, but nods. She comes to his room an hour later.
'And?' he asks, expectant, hoping.
'No one has seen her,' Fruzsi answers. Aleksander's shoulders slump. He sighs, and runs a hand through his face.
'Tell the search parties to look specifically for her,' he orders. 'I want her found. As soon as possible.'
'I know she's close to you,' Fruzsi says, frowning. 'But shouldn't we focus on-'
'She's not close to me,' Aleksander interrupts her. 'She's everything to me.'
Fruzsi is surprised, guessing what he means. He turns away from her.
'With all due respect, sirâŠ' she says slowly, '⊠why her?'
Aleksander turns to her. There's something in his eyes Fruzsi has never seen.
'Why anyone else when she exists?' he asks. The Tidemaker lingers only for a moment longer. But her place is quickly taken by someone elseâŠ
'Fedyor!' Aleksander says, happy and relieved. The Heartrender smiles and bows his head to his general. Kirigan walks to him and the two shake hands. The Darkling notices the tiredness and sadness in his friend's eyes.
'IvanâŠ' he says, his smile falling.
'Is alive,' Fedyor says. 'That's why it took me so long to get here. He's wounded and scarred. Healers are putting him back together at the moment.'
'I'm glad to hear it,' Aleksander says. 'He⊠he did well in the Fold.'
Fedyor nods. He bites his lip, hesitating.
'Any news of [Y/N]?' he asks. Sorrow fills Kirigan's eyes. He shakes his head.
'Not yet,' he answers and sighs heavily. He walks to his armchair and falls on it. He runs a hand through his face.
'I need her, Fedyor,' he says. 'Every time I turn my face, I expect to find her there. And I find nothing. It physically hurts. I've never known I'd meet a girl like her.'
'[Y/N] is one of a kind,' Fedyor agrees. Aleksander shakes his head.
'It's more than that,' he says and smiles softly. 'When I told her about my past, what I did, what I fear⊠she looked my demons in the eye and⊠smiled. She fell for the very thing I thought she'd fear.'
'I haven't met a kinder heart,' Fedyor says with a smile.
'Kind,' Aleksander says. 'Compassionate. Understanding. Gentle. That's who she is. That's why I fell for her. And I failed her. When she needed me the most, when they were throwing Grisha out of the Little Palace, I wasn't there. I even insisted she stayed there. She should have gone with you, like she wanted. But now she may be dead. And it's my fault.'
'She's not dead,' Fedyor says strongly. Kirigan looks at him with doubt.
'How can you be so sure?' he asks.
'Everyone knows she's important to you,' Fedyor answers. 'I think that if they had managed to kill her, they would have made every Grisha aware of it.'
He has a point, Aleksander must admit it. Hope reignites with him once more. Fedyor smiles.
'Fear not, General,' he says. 'She might look like a fragile flower, but her stem is made of steel.'
Aleksander can't help but smile. He nods. Fedyor's eyes suddenly light up.
'What about the gift you gave her for her last birthday?' he asks. Aleksander instinctively touches a ring on his finger. He sighs deeply.
'The problem is, I gave it to her so she would call on me if she needed help,' he says. 'Until she says my name while touching the necklace, I can't use my matching ring to track her. Believe me I⊠tried.'
'Well, we have David now,' Fedyor says. 'Maybe he could think of something.'
'He'd need something that belongs to her,' Aleksander explains, remembering how the Durast made the ring and necklace.
'And we don't have anything,' Fedyor sighs. Kirigan shakes his head.
'We will get her back, General,' the Heartrender assures him.
'I know,' Aleksander says and a look in his eyes darkens. 'I promised her. That the world can't keep us apart. And that there's nothing I wouldn't do to keep her by my side. I fully intent to keep that promise, Fedyor. No matter what.'
*
In the meantime, Alina and Mal have teamed up with a privateer, who's just turned out to be Prince Nikolai Lantsov. Together, they hunted the Sea Whip for Alina. She now has two amplifiers. She tried to destroy the Fold, but failed. After that, they head for the Spinning Wheel, a place where apparently Grisha have found a safe heaven â the Spinning Wheel. There, Alina reunites with Nadia⊠and Zoya. But the conversation with Zoya goes well, to Alina's surprise. They are now allies. After they walk their ways, Nadia joins Alina's side, uncertain.
'Someone else is in here you might be interested in,' she says.
'Who?' Alina asks, frowning. Nadia simply grabs her arm and drags her somewhere. A few corridors later the Sun Summoner sees a familiar back.
'[Y/N]!' she exclaims happily and runs forward, freeing herself of Nadia's hold. You turn around, surprised. You huff, when Alina falls into your arms. You hug her back slowly.
'Saints, I'm so glad you're okay!' she says, pulling away. You force a smile.
'Thank you,' you say. 'I'm happy you're alive as well. After I heard what had happened in the FoldâŠ'
'I made it,' Alina says, smiling, and looks over your shoulder. 'Thanks to Mal.'
You turn your head and see a young man, looking both familiar and unfamiliar. He notices you and his frown tells you he has the same situation with you.
'Mal, look who's here!' Alina calls him, waving at him with enthusiasm. The man joins you, looking at you with interest.
'I hope you remember our dear friend from Keremzin, [Y/N] [L/N],' Alina says, looking between you two. Mal's eyes spark with recognition. He smiles broadly.
'How could I not?' he says and chuckles. 'You almost cracked my skull open once!'
'You definitely deserved it!' you laugh and go in for a hug. You hold each other tightly, then pull away. In a moment Mal's brows cease with worry.
'No offense, but you look awful,' he says. You smile wryly. You're well aware of the dark circles under your eyes, puffy eyes, pale face and so on.
'Well, I sleep with my one eye open,' you say. 'I'm not exactly welcome here.'
'Why?' Alina asks, frowning. You give her a look.
'I was one of Kirigan's most loyal Grisha,' you explain. 'No one here trusts me.'
'But you didn't know what he's planning,' Alina says vehemently. The corners of your lips lift slightly.
'How can you be so sure?' you ask.
'Yes, how can we?' a voice asks. You turn your head and see a young man in a uniform. You bow your head.
'Moi tsarevich,' you greet Nikolai. He stops by Alina and Mal's side.
'So?' he asks, eyeing you. 'How can we be sure we can trust you?'
'Nikolai!' Alina scolds him. You look tsarevich in the eyes.
'I didn't know Kirigan had planned to expand the Fold,' you declare. 'In fact, we haven't been close for a long time.'
'Why?' Nikolai asks, frowning. You smile wryly at him.
'I've been asking myself this question for months,' you answer. Nikolai eyes you again.
'I trust [Y/N],' Alina says strongly. Nikolai looks at her and they exchange a look. Finally, he nods and smiles at you.
'Alina's friends are mine friends,' he says and takes your hand in his, then kisses it. 'Pleasure to meet you, Miss [L/N]. And I'm sorry for the suspicion.'
'Charmed,' you say, smiling slightly. 'And it's perfectly alright. I understand.'
'Come, we have a lot to catch up,' Alina says, taking your arm and you start walking. Soon enough she tells you what happened to her. She tells you how Baghra warned her about Aleksander. How she escaped. How she met with Mal. How they found the Stag. But then Kirigan found them. He killed the Stag and joined Alina with its bones. He tried to harness her powers for himself. He used them to expand the Fold. But there Mal and three rouges from Ketterdam saved her. She and Mal escaped to Novyi Zem. There they met Nikolai.
'And that's about it,' Alina finishes her story a moment later.
'You've certainly been busy,' you comment. Your friend sighs. There's sadness in her eyes.
'I still can't believe I let him fooled me,' she says. 'I⊠I honestly thought we share some sort of connection, you know?'
'Yeah,' you answer quietly, now sad as well. But Alina quickly becomes angry.
'I still can't believe how cruel he really was,' she says with venom. 'All those people he murdered⊠because he wanted more power. How could someone be so cold-hearted?'
'Behind every cold-hearted person there is a kind heart which has been treated with coldness for a while,' you say quietly. Alina looks at you with surprise. But you don't say anything more.
'What about you?' your friend asks. 'How did you escape from the Little Palace?'
'I didn't,' you answer after a moment. Alina frowns at you. She looks you up and down, no doubt wondering how you can be here if you hadn't escaped from the Little Palace. You avoid her eyes.
'When the First Army raided the Little Palace, I focused on getting everyone else out,' you start. 'Especially the children. So, when I was about to evacuate myself⊠it was too late. I was caught.'
'[Y/N]âŠ' Alina says, horrified. You force a smile and shake your head.
'It wasn't really for a long time,' you say. 'I escaped.'
'How?' Alina asks. You're silent for a moment. You try not to think about the time you were a captive. About what they did to youâŠ
Darkling's whore⊠Filthy witch⊠Stupid serving girlâŠ
'They were careless,' you answer. 'Thought they broke me. I used it against them. Then I found out about this place. Others weren't exactly thrilled to see me but they took me in. I guess my sorry state made them pity me.'
'[Y/N]⊠what had they done to you so they thought they broke you?' Alina asks with worry.
'Hurt me,' you answer after a moment and force a smile at her. 'You should rest. You've had a tiring journey.'
'But-' Alina starts, frowning.
'I'll see you later,' you say, hug her briefly, then walk away. Your heart is hammering in your chest. You don't look back. You don't think about what you told Alina. You don't think about it so much, you bump into someone.
'Sorry!' you apologise. The person turns out to be Zoya. She looks you over.
'How are you looking worse and worse every day?' she asks. You smile wryly.
'It's my hidden talent,' you answer and attempt to walk past her. But she grabs your arm. You look up at her. There's seriousness in her eyes.
'You're not alone,' she says, confusing you. 'Kirigan had us all fooled. I know it's hard for you, you were his personal servant and then his trusted Grisha. I know you must have certain attachment to him but⊠you have to let it go. He murdered innocents. And would do it again.'
'You⊠"Attachment"?' you repeat with disbelief. 'Zoya, I⊠He was the first person who saw I'm more than just a plain serving girl. Every time I struggled, he was there to help me. He saved me every time I was in danger. Do you remember Tsybeia? Even before it turned out I'm a Grisha he was always kind to me and protected me. And now⊠everyone tells me what he did, who he is. But I can't just forget about all the good stuff he did.'
Zoya looks at you. Suddenly, her eyes go wide. You stiffen. You know she realised your secret.
'And you love him,' she guesses and crosses her arms. 'Tell me, if he handed you a bloodied hand, would you take it, only because it was his?'
You stare at her. Tears well up in your eyes. You smile sadly, a bit brokenly.
'I honestly have no idea, Zoya,' you whisper and turn. You walk away, trying to blink away the tears. And you definitely don't think how much you miss Aleksander. Nor how much you wish he was alive.
*
The night falls. It is a relief to you, because you finally are away from the judging eyes, hurtful whispers. But the sleep never comes easily. Your thoughts are always a mess. Today as well.
You lay down in bed and try very hard to fall asleep. Your thoughts drift to everything that happened that day. You sigh and hesitantly grab the necklace on your neck. Pain clenches your heart.
AleksanderâŠ
Suddenly you find yourself in Kirigan's chambers in the Little Palace. Everything is just like you remember. You look down at yourself and see the clothes you were wearing as Aleksander's personal servant.
'I did miss the sight of that band on your arm,' you hear. Your heart stops. Oh, how you longed to hear that voice. You turn around and see Aleksander leaning on his table. He looks just like he did when you last saw him.
'Yet I still preferred to see you in your kefta,' he says, slowly walking towards you. 'It suited you. It was meant to be yours.'
'Sometimes I wish I've never discovered my powers,' you admit. 'Then I would just admire you from afar. I wouldn't feel this pain now.'
'Do you really?" Aleksander asks. You think for a moment. You smile sadly and shake your head.
'Not really, no,' you answer. 'Because it was worth it. Being with you was the happiest time of my life. Even though you insisted on hiding it from everyone.'
Aleksander stops in front of you. He hands his head.
'Will you ever find it in your heart to forgive me?' he asks. You're quiet for a moment.
'I don't know,' you answer honestly. Aleksander nods, understanding. He looks up and reaches toward your face, but hesitates. His hand hangs in the air.
'I hate seeing you sad,' he says.
'Then come back to me,' you say, tears filling your eyes. 'I just want to see you. Hold you. Hug you. Touch you. Kiss you. Cuddle with you. Love you. Then I'll stop being sad.'
Aleksander looks at you with pain. He hates to see you like this.
'I want this too, milaya,' he says. 'So much.'
'I waited for you,' you say. 'Like I promised I would. Part of me still does. Even though it's impossible for you to return to me.'
'[Y/N]âŠ' Aleksander whispers. He slowly reaches out to you again. When you don't flinch away, he cups your cheek. The moment he does, your clothes change into your kefta from the winter fete. He smiles softly.
'I didn't even tell you that you looked magnificent that night,' he says quietly. 'Beautiful. And your performance⊠You were extraordinary.'
You smile. You waited so long to hear those words. You lean into his touch.
'It's hard without you,' you say.
'I know the feeling,' Aleksander says quietly. You touch his hand that is on your cheek. You turn your head and kiss it.
'Everyone is sad to be gone from the Little Palace,' you say. 'They say their lost their home. But I lost mine before the First Army attacked us.'
'Because I was your home,' Aleksander says quietly. You nod. Kirigan presses his forehead to yours. He closes his eyes.
'I wish I was kissing you instead of missing you,' he whispers, his voice shaking from pain. You close your eyes, fighting with tears. You fail, obviously. You can feel them falling down your cheeks.
'Did you think of me?' you dare to ask. 'When you were in the Fold?'
'Yes,' Aleksander answers, clenching his jaw. 'I wanted you to be by my side. And then I wanted to come back to you.'
'Why didn't you tell me?' you ask. 'About your plans about Alina and the Fold? The real ones.'
'Because you have a compassionate heart,' Aleksander answers after a moment. 'You'd disagree with my plan. Maybe leave me.'
'You don't know that,' you say, shaking your head.
'Wouldn't you?' Aleksander challenges you. You're silent.
'I don't know what would I do,' you say and look him in the eyes. 'You robbed me of that choice.'
Kirigan looks down. Maybe he's actually ashamed a bit.
'But I know I wouldn't leave you,' you add. Aleksander's head shoots up. You cup his face.
'I promised you to be with you for better and for worse,' you say. 'No matter what would happen, I would be with you.'
'And then maybe you would die in the Fold,' Aleksander says flatly. 'This one time I wouldn't have been able to save you.'
'Maybe I would have saved myself,' you suggest with a small smile. Kirigan sighs and shakes his head.
'Sometimes I really can't with you,' he says. You grin at him. But then your smile falls.
'Kiss me?' you plead. You don't have to ask twice. Aleksander cups your face and kisses you.
'We shall be together again, my darling, I promise,' he whispers.
'I want this more than anything,' you whisper back. 'So much.'
'Be patient, [Y/N],' Aleksander pleads. 'For me. Please.'
'I'm waiting,' you whisper. 'I'll be always waiting for you.'
Kirigan opens his eyes. He's met with the wall of his room in the residence. He sighs heavily and sits up. His finger caresses the ring on his finger. Then, he lifts it to his lips.
'Please, [Y/N],' he whispers. 'Call for me. Call for me and I'll come for you. I swear. I will always come for you.'
*
You, Tamar (a Heartrender) and Nadia watch Alina training her new abilities. She thrusts light at her target⊠but even though it's impressive, it doesn't even reach it.
'Absolute rubbish,' she grunts. Nadia scoffs and gives Tamar a look.
'It's the second amplifier,' the Heartrender explains. She walks to pick up a mannequin. You three follow her.
'With the Stag, summoning came like breath,' Alina says. 'This is like⊠reining chaos. Crossing the Fold was a disaster.'
'Hey, we'll get you there,' Nadia comforts her. 'If it helps, I could hit you with a switch and call you "stupid girl".'
'It may come to that,' Alina sighs. 'How is it I'm overwhelmed by the second amplifier and at the same time feeling the lack of a third?'
'Well, for now, let's focus on what we can fix,' Nadia says.
'Your aim, for starters,' you suggest. Alina gives you a look and scoffs. You all go back.
'As leader of the Second Army, I need more,' she says. Ah, yes. You had a dinner with the Lantsov family (you were so not happy they've arrived). During that Nikolai announced he and Alina are engaged (yeah, because you didn't see how she and Mal look at each other) and that from now on she's the leader of the Second Army. Not everyone was happy about it (ekhm, Zoya).
'I need to learn the Cut,' Alina says, turning to you. You stiffen.
'That was Kirigan's way, to lead with fear,' Nadia protests. 'You can lead with your heart. The Second Army will be better for it.'
'You make a good point,' Tamar agrees. 'But I wouldn't completely reject fear. Can't tell you how many have taken one look at my girls and⊠reconsidered. I don't know how the Cut works, that's a top-shelf Etherialki move, but I do know how to direct power. It's all about intention. I like to picture the face of the person I want to crush. Try it.'
Alina positions herself and exhales. She closes her eyes. Soon light surrounds her. A moment later she grunts angrily, waves her hands and light shots forward. You all look at the effect with wide eyes.
'Well, it's not the Cut, but⊠it's effective,' Tamar laughs. Nadia suddenly straightens up.
'Wait a moment,' she says. 'We do have here someone who's managed the Cut.'
She and Alina look at you. Tamar looks at you, impressed. You gulp.
'Once,' you say. 'I did it once. And I have no idea how. I⊠didn't exactly plan it.'
'Well, what did you think about then?' Tamar asks and you stiffen. 'What did you feel?'
You see in your mind Aleksander and Alina talking together, laughing. You remember the pain and hurt you felt. You were so overwhelmed you just had to let it go. And slashed the dummy.
'Anger,' you finally answer. 'I felt anger. The kind that was killing me.'
Before anyone can ask you more, you hear footsteps. You turn and see Adrik, Nadia's brother.
'I know, not to be disturbed, but they need you in the war room,' he says to Alina. She nods and looks at others. Tamar and Nadia turn and start walking. Alina grabs her jacket and follows them. But then she notices you're not following.
'[Y/N]?' she asks. You shake your head.
'My presence will not be welcomed there,' you say and smile. 'Go without me.'
Alina hesitates, but eventually nods and leaves. Adrik is behind her. You turn to look at the dummy the Sun Summoner hit. It has a hole coming from the arm to the stomach. Almost like the Cut.
You leave a few minutes later. You take a few turns, heading toward your room, whenâŠ
'David,' you say, surprised. David with his hands spread is being led by Tolya (a Heartrender and Tamar's twin) somewhere. They stop, hearing your voice. The Durast's eyes go wide.
'[Y/N],' he says and goes pale. 'Oh, Saints, you're hereâŠ'
'Why are you' you start but then remember. David was the one who made the collar for Alina. They don't trust him here.
'Come,' Tolya says and continues to take David away. You're left there, stunned and shocked. You can't believe your dear friend is here. And that he is a prisoner, while you walk freeâŠ
Later you come across Alina on the corridor. She smiles at you. You look at her, troubled.
'I need to ask you a favour,' you say.
'Anything,' Alina says at once. You gulp.
'I need to see David,' you say. Alina blinks.
'And you need me for' she asks. You sigh.
'For getting through the door,' you say. 'Alina, just because you trust me, doesn't mean others do. Please. I need to know if he's okay.'
Alina nods and walks with you to Nikolai. The prince isn't happy but he grants you your request. A moment later you enter David's cell. Alone.
'[Y/N],' he says, straightening up at the sight of you. You smile.
'How are you, David?' you ask.
'I'm⊠fine, thank you,' he answers. You frown. He's terribly stiff.
'And not exactly thrilled to see me,' you point out. David sighs.
'Forgive me,' he asks. 'Of course, I'm happy to see you. But if he finds out you're hereâŠ'
'Who?' you ask, blinking. David stares at you. He stares at you with disbelief, when he sees you're not fooling around.
'You⊠you don't know?' he asks.
'About?' you ask, confused. David shifts, uncomfortable. He doesn't know if he should say it. But you won't let it go, he just knows it.
'Kirigan is alive,' he finally says quietly. You stumble back and hit a table with your back. You stare at David, shocked.
'No,' you say, your lip trembling. 'You're lying. He can't be.'
'I would never lie to you about this,' David says softly. You stare at him. And see no deception in his eyes. He's telling the truth.
You bring hands to your mouth and let out a sob. You close your eyes and cry. You cry for the first time since the raid. These are tears of anger, sadness, pain, sorrow⊠and joy.
'How?' you whisper, looking at David again. 'How did he survive?'
'He created something in the Fold,' he answers, wincing. 'Creatures made of shadow. I guess they helped him. But he⊠he paid a big price for it.'
'What price?' you demand.
'He's troubled by coughs, headaches, pain,' David answers. 'I⊠I fear only merzost could cure him.'
Your heart aches. You don't know how you feel about all that.
'[Y/N]⊠that necklace I gave you⊠where is it?' David asks. Your heart speeds up.
'I don't know,' you lie. 'I lost it when the Little Palace was attacked.'
'Are you sure?' David asks. 'Because if even by accident you call him⊠he will come here at once for you.'
'Me?' you ask, raising your eyebrows. The Durast looks at you. He hesitates again.
'The priority for him and his Grisha is finding you,' he finally says. 'He⊠Every day with no news about you is making him more agitated. He insists that he needs you by his side. He more or less admitted that there was something going on between you two.'
You're quiet. You shake your head.
'I'm not the one he needs,' you deny and leave. You stop a few turns later. Your hand reaches to the hidden necklace under your kefta. You stop your hand mid-air. You shake your head and resume walking. You must let go of Aleksander. For your sake. And for others'.

In Another Life
Pavilion Problems
Pairing: Aleksander Morozova x Reader
Summary: Aleksander finds you lost in thought as you consider the choices youâve made, but he manages to distract you. Set just after What the Future Holds.
Warnings [18+]: implied smut, Iâve tried to keep this oneshot gender neutral like the rest of this au so the actual smutty part isnât super explicit, mostly foreplay and lots of kissing.
My Masterlist âą Series Masterlist
Aleksanderâs voice is what rouses you from your thoughts, and you realise youâve been staring out over the lake for quite some time.
âYou seem deep in thought.â
His hands settle on either side of your waist, squeezing softly as he presses his chest against your back. Your own hands remain curled into fists as you lean on the wooden railing that surrounds the old summonerâs pavilion.
âI canât help but feel as though I made a mistake.â
He drops his chin down onto your shoulder, pressing a tender kiss against the side of your neck before he speaks his next words against your skin.
âHow so?â
âBy keeping the monarchy.â
Aleksander lifts his head up from the crook of your neck, his gaze scanning over the vicinity to ensure that no one hears you speaking treason. Always so protective, your husband.
Finding no threats, he hums quietly.
âI can see why you might think of that as a mistake at times.â
Especially after a day like today. The King had issued a new law to divide up land, putting some of Ravkaâs poorest people at a disadvantage.
Aleksander knows it must be weighing on your mind and his next question distracts you.
âWhat was your alternative?â
A soft sigh lifts your shoulders, as you look out over the shimmering water of the lake.
âDifferent seats of government. Councils, parliaments, all sorts of ideas. There was a time when I considered giving you the throne.â
One of his brows quirks upwards.
âMe?â
âI knew you would make a good king, but I didnât think you wanted the burden.â
He tilts his head, the stubble on his chin scraping over your shoulder.
âYou never asked me.â
âThings escalated quickly. By the time I considered asking you, we had a better plan in place.â
Thereâs a pause before you add quietly,
âIâm sorry. For not asking you.â
Aleksander shakes his head with a soft smile.
âI donât mind. Our honeymoon wouldnât have been as perfect as it was, had I been king.â
A smile tugs at your own lips.
Aleksander always refers to the time you spent away from Ravka as your honeymoon, despite the fact that it occurred almost a hundred years after your wedding. Your first wedding that is.
Despite his response, you canât help but ask,
âWould you have taken the throne?â
His pause is momentary.
âIf I had to.â
âBut would you want to?â
âI can certainly see the appeal - during peace time.â
You hum quietly in agreement.
Managing the country during the war had been difficult, but now that Ravka has seen only minor skirmishes through the years, you can see the benefits of being royal.
Aleksander would make a very good king.
Closing your eyes briefly, you can picture it. Aleksander sorting through papers, making laws to improve the lives of your people.
The luxurious dinners and balls you could host, where everyone would admire the two of you as a perfect couple.
When you open your eyes, you find your husbandâs gaze is already on you, studying your face with curiosity sparkling in his eyes.
Tilting your head as you meet his gaze, you smile coyly,
âTsar Aleksander.â
His sharp inhale doesnât go unnoticed by you, even as he smirks and presses closer into your body.
âDonât tease, my love.â
Warmth floods over your cheeks at his scolding tone and the smirk pulling at his lips. Mischief fills your eyes, as you feign a casual expression.
âHavenât you noticed?â
Raising a brow in questioning, Aleksanderâs eyes darken as he watches you trace a finger down the length of his unbuttoned kefta.
âI only refer to the king as Your Majesty or Your Highness.â Your eyes flicker up to meet his as you continue. âBecause there is only one man that I will ever call moi tsar.â
Aleksanderâs lips are on yours not even half a second after your words register in his mind. His mouth moves hungrily against yours, his hands gripping tightly at your waist as he guides you both backwards.
A shiver runs through you when you see the dark smirk on Aleksanderâs face.
âAre you trying to encourage indecency, my love?â
âYou canât kiss me like that and then complain about indecency.â
He chuckles.
One of his hands cups your jaw firmly, as the other turns your body around to face him for another kiss.
You take the opportunity to sink your hands into his hair, pulling a low groan from his lips as you tug lightly on the dark strands.
When your back lands against one of the columns of the pavilion, youâre both breathless.
Then you hear a creak.
With widened eyes, the two of you look up at the roof. This pavilion was created before you even arrived in this world, and you suspect that at this age it would take very little for it to break.
Aleksander appears to be thinking the same as you.
âPerhaps we should take this elsewhere.â
You nod.
âI agree.â
Instead of moving, Aleksander kisses you again.
Luckily, you have the forethought to push away from the pavilion as your husband reduces every other rational thought in your mind to a puddle.
Aleksanderâs arm is curled firmly around your body, keeping you pressed close as you continue to grasp at his hair. A hum of pleasure escapes from the back of your throat, as Aleksander squeezes the nape of your neck between his fingers.
His hand slides down your neck, tracing its way down the length of your body, fingers grazing your side before he hooks them under your knee, encouraging you to wrap your leg around his waist.
A low moan leaves your lips as his hips rock against yours, and you manage to pull away breathlessly.
âSasha, what are you doing?â
He tilts your chin back, bearing your neck for him to trail kisses along.
âI need you, right now.â
As he sucks a blooming mark against your pounding pulse, you almost relent. But you force yourself to say,
âWhat if someone sees?â
Aleksander smirks against your skin, dragging his teeth over your collarbone before he speaks.
âHave you forgotten about my shadows, dearest?â
He nuzzles his nose along the length of your throat before he whispers against the shell of your ear.
âAs long as you remain quiet, no one will ever know.â
A shiver rolls down your spine as he presses a kiss to the delicate skin there, before he takes your earlobe between his teeth for a teasing nip.
âAnd if the pavilion collapses and kills us both?â
Aleksander stills. His jaw tenses slightly as he realises that you have a point. As you laugh softly, he kisses you again. Gentler this time, with more affection than desire.
He sighs, sliding your leg down back onto solid ground, his brows creasing as he adjusts the front of his trousers uncomfortably. When he catches your gaze he remarks,
âIt is a long walk back to the Palace.â
You lift a brow at your husband.
âWho said weâre returning to the Palace?â
Interest piqued, Aleksander tilts his head in your direction as a mischievous smile tugs at your lips. Slowly, you begin to push his kefta from his shoulders, revealing his white shirt and braces underneath.
âI was thinkingâŠâ
His eyes donât leave you as you remove his kefta, tucking it over your arm before you begin to back away as you suggest,
ââŠof reliving our wedding afternoon?â
Aleksanderâs eyes darken knowingly and a thrill runs through you.
On the day of your wedding, you and Aleksander had ridden to a remote woodland not too far from the village you had been staying in.
That afternoon you spent lying down under the sun, learning every inch of one another as Aleksanderâs shadows hid you from view of anyone passing through.
You continue to step back, until youâre making your way down each of the wooden steps. Aleksander steps forward slowly, following you, and you need to tilt your head back to look at him.
âI think that is an excellent idea.â
You smile.
âGood.â
Then your smile breaks into a grin as you step down onto the grass surrounding the pavilion.
âBut youâll have to catch me first.â
Tossing his kefta back at him, you donât waste time waiting to see Aleksanderâs reaction. You hear the kefta land against his body and the sound of his laugh as you run.
Youâre barely across the small clearing before he catches up with you. His arms curl around your body, using your momentum to drag you down onto his body which makes you squeal.
âSasha!â
For a moment youâre concerned that he might have hurt himself, then his hand cups the back of your head, bringing you in for a kiss. You sigh, repeating his name softly,
âSasha.â
As his hands roam down your body, tugging lightly at your own kefta, you canât stop yourself from mumbling quiet praises against his lips.
âI love you so much.â
You had learnt Old Ravkan when it was still considered a second language in Ravka. In this day and age, very few people choose to learn it.
Hearing you speak the language Aleksander grew up speaking never fails to have him both falling deeper in love with you and wanting to drag you into his bed.
âEya fyela chi, moi Sashenka.â I love you, my Sasha.
In one movement, Aleksander rolls you both over so that your back is lying on his discarded kefta as he kisses you almost frantically. His stubble scrapes delightfully against your chin as you slide your hands under his shirt.
He shivers under your touch, throwing your kefta away once heâs finally freed you from it.
His accent thickens as he repeats the same words to you, filled with the same amount of love and want and adoration.
Aleksander tugs his each of his braces down with a smooth movement, as you unbutton his shirt. You kiss over the faded scars that cover his chest and as he shrugs off his shirt you reach for the clasp of his trousers.
He unbuttons your own shirt, pushing it off your shoulders and down your arms into a crumpled heap under your body. His trousers are halfway down his legs before you get distracted by his mouth layering kisses over your chest and up your neck again.
Aleksander kisses you lazily as he removes the rest of your clothing, the summer sun and his eager touch has warmth simmering under your skin.
You breathe out his name, over and over, in pleasure filled gasps and whispers. His deft fingers working over your body knowingly. There isnât a single inch of you that Aleksander doesnât know intimately.
He stares wide-eyed at you as you climax over his hand. As you swim through the waves of pleasure, a smile blooms over your lips and you look up at the handsome figure of your husband.
Aleksander captures your lips once again, his own smile widening at the sight of pure adoration in your eyes.
He groans lowly as you wrap your legs around his waist, finally giving him what he needs. Gripping onto your hips, Aleksander inhales slowly, eyes flickering towards yours in an unspoken question.
After over a century together, you know exactly what heâs asking you for. Permission to take what he needs from you, something that youâve always been happy to give him.
Brushing your nose tenderly against his, you whisper.
âIâm all yours, moi tsar.â

Completely shocking, out-of-the-blue prompt that I've never mentioned to you before, definitely not inspired by work:
Ivan is a grumpy librarian/archivist, and Fedyor is a researcher who comes by looking for information on Darklina and/or their connection to Nikolai, and he finds the background of a love story. Obviously, the main character is Ivan's Disgust at the Perception of Heterosexuality
The light in the windowless back office is dim, grainy, and often gives Ivan a headache within the first few hours of him getting to work, which is not ideal for improving his temper. (Then again, not much is.) And despite its flaws, he does vastly prefer it to actually having to interact with the library patrons, as there is literally nothing worse than that. Especially academics, who come in with their laundry lists and their obscure texts, their pet projects and their insistence that if he just looks harder, he's sure to find it this time. Ivan has entertained many, many happy visions of just walking out, locking the doors behind him, and setting the whole thing on fire. Not that he has done that, and he probably -- probably -- wouldn't. He needs this job. Employment for a notorious ex-special ops soldier is thin on the ground as it is, and especially when it means he can, if he plays his cards right, spend most of the day completely alone. But still.
It is now, however, winter break at Os Alta Imperial State University, which means the throngs of panicked students trying to finish their last-minute assignment have mercifully receded, and Ivan can mostly organize his boxes in peace. Or so he thinks, until the accursed tinkle of the Please Ring for Service bell summons him like a wrathful specter, sweater-clad and glowering, to the front desk. "What?!"
"Uh. Good morning to you too." The newcomer -- young, dark-haired, and holding a large manila folder which portends absolutely nothing good, raises both eyebrows. "Can I speak to the archivist?"
"You're speaking to him," Ivan growls. This welcome has caused more than one quaking undergraduate to flee in abject terror rather than ask for even one book, and he fondly hopes for a similar effect this time. But the newcomer -- too old for an undergrad, so probably an advanced doctoral candidate or junior lecturer -- is made of stronger stuff, and doesn't flinch. "Can I help you, Mr... ?"
"Doctor," the annoyingly handsome interloper (not that Ivan has noticed) informs him. "Dr. Fedyor Kaminsky. I'm the new lecturer in the history department, Modern Ravkan History, and I was hoping that you could retrieve a few records for me? Boxes..." He consults his notes. Ivan contemplates murder. "T-1343 and T-1345 especially?"
Oh, great. Not again. Kaminsky -- yes, he vaguely recalls that name, from a department telegram welcoming the new faculty and staff, but it is absolutely not germane to Ivan's further actions in any part. He knows what is in those boxes, and someone always thinks they'll find something there that hasn't already been found, removed, and/or heavily censored. Ravka's last tsar and tsaritsa, Nikolai Lantsov and his half-Shu queen, Alina Starkov, are a figure of fascination and mystery for plenty of people, even after the revolution and the establishment of the Konsilium and everything that befell them as a result. Especially their relationship with the so-called Darkling, Aleksander Morozova, one of the most enigmatic and controversial figures in all of Ravkan history. Doctor Fedyor Kaminsky thinks he's going to jump into his new job with that? Good luck.
"We don't have those boxes," Ivan says, which is almost true. The Konsilium strongly prefers, in general, that people don't look at them, and any other uncomfortable bits of their history. "Go away."
Fedyor Kaminsky folds his arms. "No."
Saints, Ivan thinks sourly. What has he done to deserve this purgatory? (The Konsilium has also tried to outlaw the Ravkan Faith, since they're all supposed to be modern and secular now and because nobody wants another Apparat, but old habits are hard to break.) He stares at Fedyor, who stares back. This is confounding. Why hasn't he run away in terror yet? Everyone else does.
"Sorry," Ivan says, and turns away. "Can't help. Good day."
Naturally, Fedyor Kaminsky does not take the hint. He's back again the next day, still politely and stubbornly repeating his request for those boxes, and when Ivan loathingly suggests that the library is on winter-break hours and does not have to accommodate him at all, cheerily asks if Ivan's boss, the director of special collections, would agree. The threat of workplace discipline (or Saints forbid, a note in his permanent file) is stiff enough to make Ivan finally, furiously recant. Fine. If Kaminsky wants to get himself fired before even finishing his first year, it's nothing to Ivan. Might be a perk.
So, when they're into the second week of the requests, Ivan gives in, stomps to the back, and angrily hauls down the boxes, which are gathering dust from all the times he has, according to the rules, refused access to them before. It's not wise for Fedyor to look at these materials in the open, so Ivan tells him to take them to one of the backside reading rooms -- which is right across from Ivan's office, and makes him grimly reflect that he should have planned it better. But Fedyor works steadily and mostly silently, which is always a commendation in Ivan's book, and finally, on one dead-silent freezing morning right after the Winter Fete, when they are literally the only two people in the library and probably all of campus, he gives in. "What are you looking for?"
Fedyor jumps, glancing up in patent surprise. They eye each other for a long moment, as if to be sure that Ivan Sakharov actually did, entirely of his own volition, initiate a conversation with another human being. Then finally, warily, he says, "What's it to you?"
Good, Ivan thinks. Good instincts, just in case I was in fact an informer for the Konsilium. "I don't care," he says aloud. "I was just curious. They seemed so important to you."
"I'm just working on something," Fedyor says, after a long pause. "Confirming a hypothesis. It'll probably get me into trouble, but -- " He shrugs, with no small amount of bitterness. "I'm used to that."
Ivan thinks about it. This can't go anywhere good, but they've been made a strange sort of partners in this buried secret, and he's almost gotten used to Fedyor working away outside his door. "What?"
"I think they were lovers," Fedyor says, after a final, reluctant moment. "Alina and the Darkling, that is, and then also Alina and Nikolai, and maybe all three of them together. I think it's a love story. And as for why this matters, well -- it wouldn't change anything about our own history right now, how it all ended. But the narrative has always been that the Darkling was this awful monster who had to be destroyed, and the Grisha were his secret shock troops determined to overthrow the country on his behalf, and that pulled Alina and Nikolai into some regrettable circumstance they couldn't control and that led to their tragic downfall -- you know. It's just..."
"What?"
"I don't think it's true." Fedyor shrugs again. "I think everything we know about our own past, about the fall of the Imperial House of Lantsov, and about the Grisha, is a lie. And if that's the case, then the Konsilium knows it, or has covered it up, and that means -- "
"Shut up," Ivan interrupts roughly. "Saints. Don't talk like that. Someone could hear you."
"You could hear me." Fedyor smiles a little, a shadowed eclipse, and it does something very strange to Ivan's innards. "Does that matter?"
"I... " Ivan's mouth is dry. He can't look away. Not for any reason that means anything. "Never mind," he says, which seems the best and safest option, if it isn't already far too late. "Go back to work."
Fedyor eyes him a moment longer, then nods, a deliberate motion indicating that he knows and understands Ivan is choosing to keep his secret. Ivan himself doesn't know why, or what it is about Doctor Kaminsky, the feckless and foolish and fearless, that's gotten under his skin. It could be -- but no, it's not, it can't be that. From time to time, the very brave or very stupid actually think that Ivan himself is good-looking and try to flirt, and once a woman actually asked him on a date, which was the worst moment of his entire life (does he look like a heterosexual?!?!) But it's just shallow, surface-level, not like they're seeing him. Not like they know what monstrosity lies beneath. I think it's a love story. As if love matters. As if love, and the simple truth of it, can change the course of history.
Ivan shudders, once and then again. He looks at Fedyor for a very long moment, allowing himself -- just for that short and fleeting instant -- to imagine something he can never, never have. He grieves for it as if it was real, and then he lets it go. Turns, and walks away.

Correcting all the atrocities against Russian language in Grishaverse
I think that I mightâve already wrote on this topic here before, but I canât seem to find it and Iâm continuously bitter with the way my language has been expropriated and twisted in the girishaverse series, so, without further ado, 10 things that infuriated me (and the ones I remembered now, for there are surely more) as a Russian speaking person:
1. The first being the Grisha itself. Itâs a male name. A shortened version of the name Grigoriy, to be exact. To call an entire group of people like that is⊠try switching it to âJohnnyâ every time you read it and youâll understand the pain. She couldâve at least try and justify it with some âfirst everâ character with such powers named Grigoriy, so thatâs why theyâre called that⊠but no
2. All the names. Listen, if youâre using Russian names while writing in English (or any other language that doesnât differentiate between genders) you have two ways:
eradicate the switch completely, giving everyone the male version (i.e. default bcs thatâs the world we live in), or
FUCKING STICK TO THE RULES OF THE LANGUAGE YOUâRE GOT THEM FROM. The female Russian last names will always have a vowel in the end. So, itâs Aleksander Morozov and Baghra Morozova (Iâm dying to know what name she thought that one is a short version of, for it just doesnât exist). Itâs Alina Starkova. Genya Safina (which should be Evgeniya, bcs Genya is a short version). Zoya Nazelenskaya (her name looks to me as of Polish and/or Ukrainian origins, correct me of Iâm wrong. Iâm only going off from the Russian language rules), etc.
3. Itâs Fyodor, not Fedyor. And itâs Kaminskyi or Kaminskyy, there is an extra sound in the end, not just -y. Actually, for this last name use the name of the President of Ukraine as a guide, their names would be of the same origin, same as Zoyaâs last name.
4. You cannot use just any word as a name in Russian language. I know that itâs sort of a thing in modern English language, but itâs not a case here. So, if I recall, there was a character with the name âPrivyetâ in the books. Which means âhiâ in Russian. Donât do things like that. Please. I beg of you. Fun fact, we have Vera, Nadezhda and Lubov (Faith, Hope and Love respectively) as real FEMALE ONLY names, but no such thing as just taking a word like say âOtvaga - Braveryâ and making it a name. Nope.
5. Donât even get me started on the idiocy that âotkazatâsyaâ is. Itâs. A. Fucking. Verb. Means âto refuseâ in a slightly different context that âotkazatââ. There isnât a single version of the reality where it wouldâve made sense to call a group of people by verb. None. If she wanted it to mean âthe abandonedâ as in âthe power abandoned themâ, she shouldâve called them âotvergnutyyeâ or âostavlennyyeâ. If the meaning is more towards âthey refused that powerâ, then it should be smth like âotkazavshiesyaâ.
6. They have stressed the wrong syllable in the âmerzostââ on the show. Supposed to be the first one. Not sure whether or not she meant to use the word âfilthâ in regards to the forbidden magic, or if, once again, she just liked the sound of this word.
7. âKeftaâ shouldâve just been âkaftanâ
8. I actually hate that she couldnât just stick to the names that wouldâve been found in Russian empire during the time she drew inspiration from. What is Baghra and Malyen???? Whereâd she get them??? I can stretch Baghra as being a very strange short version of the name Agrafena (veeeeery old Russian name, which suits her long life), but itâs a big stretch to say the least. Malyen just doesnât exist. Mal doesnât exist as a name (itâs a old version of the word âsmallâ though)
9. What is the word âTsarinaâ everyone seems to use in fanfiction where Alina and Aleksander rule over Ravka? There is no such word. There are:
Tsar - the male ruler
Tsaritsa - female ruler and/or wife of a Tsar
Tsarevich - son of Tsar and Tsaritsa
Tsarevna - daughter of Tsar and Tsaritsa
No Tsarina.
10. Davidâs last name is extremely strange. I assume heâs not of Ravkan origins, from his first name, but Kostyk - is a friendly short version of a name Konstantin. Iâm debated over the fact whether or not this form of this name has even been in use before Soviet Union actually. Iâve met people with the last name like Kostyukevich and Konstantinov though (there are many last names that originated from first names in Russian language many, many years ago. But there are rules for the ways they were formed)
Feel free to add all the ways Leigh Bardugo butchered other languages and cultures in this series

Single Glimpse of Relief
Aleksander Morozova x Healer!reader Drabble
Warnings: death, mentioned injuries, grief, burn out, war
Word count: 600ish
Only twenty minutes to sleep
But you dream of some epiphany
Just one single glimpse of relief
To make some sense of what youâve seen
Your knuckles are white as you grip the back of the wooden chair, listening to the news. Your patient had died while in recovery. The healer on call suspected it was a blood clot, something easy to miss especially when you were focusing on mending bone and keeping the patient from bleeding out. Still, you had been a healer for so long, you should have seen it, you should have known, you were supposed to be one of the best. How did you not catch it? You dismiss the messenger, keeping composure until the door clicks shut. Then you let the tears stream down your face. It had been a long day, a long week really, and you had been so busy. So much stress, so many broken bones, gunshot wounds, lacerations, even a couple amputations along with all the nobles of court requesting a healer for the smallest of injuries and ailments. And of course you spent much of your down time listening to your fellow Grisha as you tried to help with wounds of the soul. You were so very drained and in this moment, you blame yourself for the loss of your patient.
You let out a scream of frustration and wrench the chair towards the wall. It hits with a thud and knocks a painting off the space next to it. You sit down on the floor and put your head between your knees as you sob. Thatâs where he finds you.
âMalyshka, whatâs wrong?â Aleksandar asks in concern as he crouches down next to you.
âItâs my fault, it had to have been my fault,â you gasp without looking up.Â
âI heard about your patient and Iâm very sorry he didnât make it, but the healers assured me that there was no way you could've seen it.â He places his hand on your back and rubs gentle circles.
âMaybe if I had been there instead of asleep, I couldâve done something. I couldâve healed him before it was too late.â
âMalyshka, baby, can you look at me, please?â
You lift your head slowly and turn to face him. He carefully cups your face in his hands. âThis was not your fault. There was nothing to be done.â
You begin to voice your imagined protests, but he cuts you off.Â
âDo you blame the healers watching when he passed? Would you have them forgo their sleep even to the same extremes you do?â
You shake your head.
âThen do not blame yourself, my love.â
You unfold yourself and allow him to pull you into his arms, tucking your face into his neck.
This knifeâs edge the Grisha were balancing on was precarious. The Tsar would use all of you as barely more than cannon fodder. Aleksander was constantly fighting on and off the battlefield to protect your people. You worked night and day to reduce mortalities, often forgetting to eat until Aleksander ordered you out of the infirmary and back to his rooms where you werenât allowed to leave until you had eaten and hydrated enough to satisfy him. You were one of the few people in the Second Army who slept less than him. Sometimes, he would find you half asleep at your desk or leaning against the wall in a hallway, occasionally flat out on the ground in your chambers because youâd fallen asleep before you could reach your bed. During these times, he would scoop you into his arms and take you back to his chambers where he would sleep with his arms wrapped around you so you wouldnât sneak off back to work. He took care of you, and you him. Whenever he left Os Alta, you were right by his side. And you never wanted to leave it.
This is probably just a oneshot/drabble

First Words Meme
I was tagged by the lovely @jomiddlemarch
Rules: post the first lines of your 10 most recent fanfics.Â
Okay, Iâm gonna go with most recent chapters, so:
I am in shock. (The Unabridged and Annotated Diary of Mrs. Alina Morozova, ch 9)
It all started with a new invention from the Fabrikatorsâ workshop: a two feet long, one foot high mahogany box with an oversized, brass horn on top of it, that could play back soundsâ somehow ârecorded on a cylinder. (Modern Times)
The next day finds them in one of the receiving rooms, facing both the Healer and the midwifeâthe two women wearing near identical, stern, but cautiously hopeful expressionsâ, because now that the shock and the elation has faded a little, there are warnings to hear out. (A Longing Deep and Profound, ch 2)
"I love you like this." (Eclipsed Ones, ch 56: Serenity)
Aleksander knew Alina had a past. (Better Man)
The first of the month falls on a Monday, which is such an insignificant coincidence that he wouldnât even take notice of it if not for the fact that it, without question, starts out as a MONDAY, like that, with all capitals, displaying such an array of mondays-are-bad-luck cliches that even Garfield would be bewildered. (Advent Romance)
âWhere are you going?â (In a Mirror, Brightly)
Aleksander was positive that currently he had the best view in the whole world: Alina above him as he lay in bed, naked as the day she was born, dark hair tousled, her face locked in ecstasy, breasts bouncing as she moved, her legs opened wide so he could see perfectly as his cock disappeared into that sweet, sweet spot at the apex of her thighs. (Led by Desire, ch 3: Wrath)
Alina and Aleksander were having a gender reveal partyânot because they felt like they needed this much fanfare to let the world know the sex of their baby, but because Genya wanted to have one, and they had come to realize a long time ago that when Genya Safin set her mind on something, she became an unstoppable force, a hurricane in human form, so the best thing you could do was to simply⊠give in. (Piece of Cake, ch 7: Schrödingerâs Baby)
Although Mistress Bilka had worked in stately houses on both sides of the Shu-Ravkan border, nurturing the children of nobles, diplomats, and the richest of merchants, and thus was no stranger to highest levels of society, being asked to teach the two eldest daughters of the Tsar and Tsaritsa of Ravka was an honor beyond belief. (Tales from the Palace, ch 3: Narangerel Bilka)
Oh, okay, so... Either very short - often dialogue - or very long sentences :D

Gimme deets on Soulmates!
Oooo this one is fun.
Soulmates is a short series of oneshots that plays with the idea of different ways you can know your soulmate. Each oneshot has a different pairing. All pairings are canon x oc.
They say having a soul mate connection is supposed to be a wonderous thing. Especially sharing thoughts. It's supposed to lead people to happiness. A perfect match. So it makes sense that her soulmate was as much an asshole as she could be a bitch.
Based on the idea of having a telepathic bond with your soulmate
Pairings include:
Aleksander Morozova x Valya. They share an unwilling telepathic bond.
It is an audience with the tsar and tsaritsa, another obvious display of their power they hold over him and his people, when he first hears her. Why must we be summoned constantly? Are there not more important things that demand their attention? Like feeding our people? Dread settles in his stomach. Itâs not possible. He is surrounded by his peopleâŠand nobles. It cannot be one of them. Saints forbid. Servants in the Grand Palace are religious or ignorant. Or both. He canât imagine that they would ever let themselves be friendly or even tolerant of Grisha. The other option is one of those greedy, petty, preening and useless parasites that are the bane of his existence. They are all sycophants to the tsarâs whims.
Eric (Divergent) x Nina
Stop listening to her. What? He asks, making sure he doesnât give any indication he hears her through his face. Jeanine. Stop listening. Itâs not going to take you anywhere good. I have to. No, you donât. Find a different way before she kills us all.Â
Matt Murdock (MCU) x Cora
The wind whispers soft through the grass, hon. The field mice, they make not a peep. Itâs been thirty-eight minutes already. Jesus Christ, what the fuck? Go to sleep. âCan you not?â he asks. All the kids from daycare are in dreamland. The froggie has made his last leap. Hell no, you canât go to the bathroom. You know where you can go? The fuck to sleep. I get the point, he thinks. You sure about that? She asks back. Because you know itâs like one in the morning, right? I know. Want to play a game? She asks. He perks up, surprised. Sheâs rarely into games as far as he knows. At least, from what theyâve talked about so far. Sure, he tells her. Truth or dare? Truth, he thinks. Whenâs the last time you went to sleep? Dare. Go to sleep.
Billy Russo (MCU) x Hala (this is the only one where instead of hearing your soulmate's thoughts, you see them in the reflection)
Hala does not want a soulmate. She never has. All that sounded like to her was someone who had power over you, one way or another. She knew he was out there. Caught glimpses of him as she walked, but she did her best to keep herself hidden, covered so that should he catch a glimpse, there'd be no way to find her. She's not about to give up her life just because the universe decrees she's meant to be someoneâs. Screw the universe. It's never helped her before. The world is filled with reflective surfaces. It is not uncommon to find people staring in mirrors, into window displays, as they try to figure out who their soulmate is. Itâs extremely popular to search, hoping itâs a celebrity or someone well-known. Hala is not stupid. A soulmate does not promise fidelity. It does not promise safety. It does not promise that they wonât look at you without that flinch or first glance of disgust. Sheâs seen it happen.

Ten minutes.
Ever since Alina first began practicing under Aleksander Morozova sheâd been diligent with arriving early and prepared to begin. Now she was pushing ten minutes late and perhaps even longer if people didnât move.
The Os Alta foot traffic seemed to be more compact than usual that afternoon. Alina weaved in and out of people without care as she all but sprinted into the studio.
âIâm sorry,â were the first words past her lips upon arriving.
âThe C train was delayed and I thought itâd be quicker on foot.â
Honestly an Uber wouldâve served her better, but it was too late for that. âI only meant to meet with Mal for an hour, but itâs just been so long since weâve seen each other I lost track of time-â
Alina unwound the red scarf from her neck before unbuttoning her coat.
â- and before I knew it weâd been sitting in the cafe for two hours.â
Out of breath, she looked toward Aleksander with delayed sheepishness.
âIt wonât happen again.â
Could he truly fault her? At only twenty-one she was a member of the renowned Os Alta Royal Opera. The company was by no means an easy one to join, and sopranos were a dime a dozen. Every day she thanked the Saints, fate, or the universe itself for allowing her a spot in the chorus. It was rare that she had time for enjoyable social events among her friends not in the opera world.

There had only been two attempts made upon her during their forty year reign. The first was five years after her coronation, made by a man whoâd claimed to see visions of Sankta Magda in which he was urged to free âSankta Alinaâ. The man had supposed death among the Saints was preferable to a life at the side of the Black Tsar, and shot at her while she was mingling with her subjects in Os Alta. The event hadnât sunk in until later that evening when Alina found herself shaking like a leaf in the bath. Â
The second was earlier that day while on her way back from opening a new school outside the city limits. Alina found it odd to think that people would want her present at such a thing; sheâd lived years as the âSun Saintâ and still found the idea that she was anything special ridiculous. Yet such duties befell the Queen of Ravka, duties that had often be ignored by the previous Lantsov queen. The Grisha and oprichniki that accompanied her stopped in order to fix the axle of one of the carriages when a man appeared at the edge of the forest that bordered the road. The bullet hadnât gotten anywhere near her as one of the Heartrenders incapacitated the assassin, yet the mere experience left her rattled. She hadnât been told much about the manâs motives upon his arrest, yet it appeared that hatred of her kind was among his thoughts.
Alina rubbed at her temples with her hand, the other holding a half filled glass of kvas.  âDonât tease me,â she warned Aleksander at his comment on the number of years. âNot now.â
She set aside the glass when he neared her, preferring to bring her knees to her chest in order to wrap her arms around her legs. Curled up in her nightdress before the fire, she certainly looked more like the former Orphan of Kermazin than she did Tsaritsa of Ravka.
âBecause I know why you do what you do,â she responded cryptically.  âNot all of it, mind you, but most of it.â Her arms tightened near painfully around her legs.Â
âThat man hates me, hates us, and I hadnât even seen his face before today.â
Her expression darkened as her gaze drifted toward the fire in the grate.  âNow I hate him.â
Alina had pled for mercy for the first assassin, knowing that he couldnât have been in his right mind. But this man? This man would receive no such intervention from her.

The ballroom was too stuffy, the bodice of her new gown too stiff, and the weight of the nightâs expectations too heavy. Alinaâs first Season wasnât the nightmare she expected it to be, but neither was it pure bliss. It seemed that the Duchess Keramsov, the frivolous wife of her equally frivolous guardian, was enjoying the Season more than the young debutante. The last Alina saw her the woman was rosy cheeked from drink and gossiping with a crowd of biddies. The duchess did not need to put up with the curious glances and evaluating looks made by members of the ton; an unwed foreign heiress was something of interest.
Alina raised her glass of champagne to her lips, catching sight of the dance card attached to her wrist. The last gentleman she danced with remarked upon her charming accent and grasp of her new countryâs language. The comments had sounded more patronizing than appreciative, leaving her with a longing to retreat to the familiar.
The young woman made to set down her empty glass on a table when her arm brushed that of another.
âPardon me, sir,â she said, eyes raising to meet the strangerâs.

Alina never wished to see another train or carriage for as long as she lived. Â Her journey began in Keramzin, where she took a hired stagecoach from the orphanage of her childhood to a train station. Â A trip across the country brought her nearly to her new home. Â Yet another stagecoach carried her to the town where she was to meet her intended husband. Â Alina wished to simply stand on solid ground for a few moments to appreciate the stillness.
Crammed in the stagecoach, stuck next to a loud-mouthed matron who had not stopped talking since they left the train station, Alina tried her best to keep her cool. Â She all but flew out of the coach when it came to a stop in town, eager to get out of the confinement of vehicle. One of the drivers alighted from the front bench in order to remove Alinaâs trunk from atop the coach. Â What little she owned was contained within, as well as the linens and meager items she could claim as a dowry. Â She didnât come from much, and had made that plain to her intended.
Few options were given to her upon aging out of the orphanage. Â It had been an act of charity by Ana Kuya and the Duke to allow her to stay till the ripe old age of 21, even if she did work at the establishment to earn her keep. Â With Mal having gone into the army, answering an ad for a wife from a man living on the frontier hadnât been the craziest of ideas.Alina stood under the wooden overhang of the stagecoach depot, shielded from the strong sun as she awaited the arrival of Aleksander Morozova. Â Sheâd included a sketch of herself in one of her letters to him, knowing she hadnât the money for a daguerreotype. Â His description of himself was what she used as she nervously scanned the passerby.
